Handy reference guide for beginners, maybe for practitioners

Handy reference guide to the 27 (with Abijit, 28) nakshatras, or lunar mansions, used extensively in Jyotisha practice to find the specific character of the Moon (& other lagnas).

Jyotisha contains both solar & lunar astrological lineages. Nakshatra readings are from the older, lunar component. Westerners accustomed to tropical, solar-only astrology will find nakshatra divisions perhaps a very new concept. (For a historical explanation of the merging of solar & lunar systems in Jyotisha, see Valerie Roebuck "The Circle of Stars".)

Harness' "Nakshatras" provides a nice way to dip one's baby toe into the rich & complex lunar-house system. It offers about 3 pages of description for each nakshatra. 3 pages turns out to be perfect for beginner-level quick reference without detailed study.

Each 3-page description includes David Frawley's definition of the nakshtra's "shakti" or divine energy, the central stars in its astronomical constellation, ruling planet & ruling deities, animal symbol, and descriptive psychological profile. (Harness has a PhD in counseling psychology.) There is a brief but useful section on using nakshatras to establish relationship compatibility, and a note on kuja dosha. Good index too!(A great rarity in Jyotisha books...) At the end, there is an appendix containing 12 basic rashi profiles, which may be helpful for early beginners.

If you are starting from a Western astrological perspective and have never heard of nakshatras, by all means buy this modest volume for your Jyotisha bookshelf. It is approachable and easy to read.

Seasoned practitioners of the Vidya may find the descriptive material rather superficial, to the point of sounding vapid. This is definitely not a scholarly text. Considering the complexity of nakshatra lore, it is not even particularly informative.

However, there is one advanced feature that experienced Jyotishi may agree re-pays the cost of this book. That is Harness' by-permission copy of B.V. Raman's incredibly convenient nakshatra marriage compatibility chart, listed toward the end of the volume. If one does frequent compatibility assessments, this chart can be a time-saver.

Despite its limitations or perhaps because of them, "Nakshatras" offers good value to its intended audience of early beginner students of Jyotisha. Harness has done a service by packaging "the tip of the iceberg" in a pleasant, accessible style.

A Very Handy Resource on Nakshatras

Dennis Harness holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology and has studied both Eastern and Western astrology. This book is his presentation of the Nakshatras, which are the 27 (or, for some 28) Lunar Mansions of Vedic Astrology. The Nakshatras have a particularly interesting import in analysis when we consider that in ancient Indian culture people identified the stars, satellites, and planets with demons, gods, and other supernatural forces as components and constructs of reality. Frequently divine and metaphysical factors were perceived as spiritual forces that dispensed grace and penalty to the individuals they contacted. Hence, the lunar mansions, which correlates with the 28-day lunar cycle through the zodiac, corresponds to a period of divine sovereignty as indicated by the Lord who presides over that domain in time. In Indian mythology, each Nakshatra is represented as one of the Moon's brides.
This entire text is devoted to a presentation of the Nakshatras, and it includes sections such as: Choosing Auspicious Lunar Nakshatras; Relationship Compatibility; a very well organized appendix that aids you in identifying Planets, Houses and Ascendants "at a Glance;" and a handy Sanskrit glossary. This text is very easy to read, and very well presented.

Useful explanation about retirement income

In what looks to be the 5th book in his series, Todd Tresidder has provided a fine explanation about how to prepare one's finances for retirement.

I've recently written about how there are two schools of thought about retirement income. One is a probability-based approach which looks at what would have worked historically. This has been developed by the financial planning profession. This is where the 4% rule comes from. Todd calls it "conventional retirement planning," and he spends the first half of the book explaining all of the problems with it. I agree wholeheartedly with his various conclusions here, such as that there is no such thing as "The Number" needed for retirement, and that too many investigators rely too heavily on the historical record for building their conclusions. Especially when market valuation levels are particularly high and/or interest rates are particular low (today's situation), historical averages are going to present an overly rosy picture about what is going to work.

He provides lots of sensible advice. He gets you to focus on the key modeling assumptions which will provide the main impact on the results. One alternative model he describes is to build a floor of guaranteed income sources to cover basic expenses, and then invest more aggressively for the things which may be "nice to have." This is the essential recommendation coming out of the other retirement income school of thought which I call "safety first." He also reminds that you should be using your entire balance sheet of assets rather than just your financial assets when thinking about retirement income. It's another key component of the "safety-first" school.

The book is short, to the point, and provides a good overview of what consumers should be thinking about so as to not blindly accept the built-in assumptions of retirement calculators they may come across on the web.

Magic Retirement?

Having followed Mr. Tressider for a couple years now I was intrigued how he would expand his "Ultimate Retirement Calculator" into a treatise on retirement scenarios. Like others who've reviewed this e-book, I have been researching my own retirement using scenarios found on smartmoney.com to Money Magazine to AAII. Other authors such as Daniel R Solin "The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read" and Bill Schultheis "The New Coffeehouse Investor" have simple portfolio building techniques but nothing quite as in depth for retirement nest egg as Mr. Tressider has done here.
I plan on rereading and recalculating [and saving] until I'm comfortable.

I retired at 45 by doing essentially what this author describes in his cash-flow model (although I wish I'd had the benefit of having this book beforehand to lay out the method so eloquently before I did it on my own -- it would have saved some stress). This book will be a great guide to anybody who's brave enough to take the plunge & step off the 9-5 treadmill early. Good luck!

About the Author
Aram Saroyan is an internationally known poet, novelist, biographer, memoirist and playwright. His poetry has been widely anthologized and appears in many textbooks. Among the collections of his poetry are Aram Saroyan and Pages (both Random House). His largest collection, Day and Night: Bolinas Poems, was published by Black Sparrow Press in 1999. Saroyan's prose books include Genesis Angels: The Saga of Lew Welch and the Beat Generation; Last Rites, a book about the death of his father, the playwright and short story writer William Saroyan; Trio: Portrait of an Intimate Friendship; The Romantic, a novel that was a Los Angeles Times Book Review Critics' Choice selection; a memoir, Friends in the World: The Education of a Writer; and the true crime Literary Guild selection Rancho Mirage: An American Tragedy of Manners, Madness and Murder. He is featured in the documentary film One Quick Move or I’m Gone: Jack Kerouac at Big Sur and his comments appear in the oral biographies George Being George: George Plimpton’s Life and Salinger. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, painter Gailyn Saroyan.

Aram Saroyan’s minimalist approach to verse caused an uproar in the 1960s with the publication of two poems by the author, one being an unconventionally spelled single word piece, entitled lighght, and the second, even shorter, being the letter “m” with four legs. Noted conservatives were extremely displeased, shouting “That’s not a poem!” or “That’s not even spelled correctly!” while others looked beyond the surface, saying things like, “{Saroyan] plays with the glimmering quality of light, leaving us with intimations of his single syllable of light's expanding, silently and weightlessly, 'gh' by 'gh', into . . . Final Illumination," or “the poem plays on formation of an alphabet, as if 'm' and 'n' are in the process of separating. It can also be understood as a pun on "I am”, implying the formation of consciousness itself.” Each side seemed to make a good case for its point and the argument never resolved.

n a sense, Mr. Saroyan may be seen as an early example, perhaps, indeed, the very first, of the trend toward literary minimalism emerging in the 1990s exemplified by 3 minute long “slam” poems, and the more recent, less sensational “flash fiction” movement represented by the F-Bomb series at the Mercury Café in Denver. But far from a one trick pony, Saroyan has tried any number of methodologies besides concrete poetry, including prose fiction and nonfiction. He has also worked as an essayist, playwright, educator, editor, and publisher over the course of his career.

His latest, Still Night in L.A., is a detective novel synthesizing the best bits of crimefic top dogs Chandler, Hammett, and MacDonald. 21st century L.A. detective Michael Shepard narrates his adventures in laconic first person interspersed with evocative black and white photos of Los Angeles taken by the author (except for the one on the cover of an L.A. highway sunset reflected in a car’s rear view mirror, by his son, Armenak Saroyan). One morning, Shepard is invited to the fashionable Hollywood apartment of an attractive women and hired to be her bloodhound. I’ve been reading detective fiction since I was a pre-teen when my mother handed me an Earl Stanley Gardner novel. I’ve been at it ever since.
Aram Saroyan’s Still Night in L.A. arrived a couple of days ago. First of all, as an old book publisher I had to admire the look and feel of the book. Great cover and well-made. That out of the way, I started reading and couldn’t put it down. So different from anything else I read. I loved the interior dialogues of the main character. I like to feel the drama of what a character thinks and feels. A perfect rainy day read.

Raymond Carver meets Raymond Chandler

I read and loved this book shortly after its publication. It's L.A. detective genre in a unique new skin. Michael Shepard, Saroyan's L.A. private eye struggles, with class and refreshing honesty, with personal problems we can all relate to while he's on the case, on the trail of his man. He's not only funny but flawed in ways we can identify with. But then my perspective of the novel changed after I went to a book reading by Saroyan at City Lights books. Saroyan explained that this slender treasure of a novel had once been eight or nine times longer. He cut it to the bone a la Raymond Carver and I was then able to understand and appreciate exquisite the narrative jewels that survived his sculpting. I read the book a second time, now aware the beauty of its structure. I couldn't recommend any other book more highly. James Jordan

Beautiful Artwork and a Solid Storyline

I greatly enjoyed this tale of the West in the 1880s.

The artwork is beautifully drawn: highly detailed and with a very muted but appropriate palette that really enhances an already good story. The splashes of color - typically blood from a gun shot or knife wound, really stand out all the more and punctuate the difficulty of life in the wild west. The art is also highly detailed - full color throughout and with none of the sparsity of modern digital comics. Chapters are divided with gorgeous, 2-page, high color painting-like artwork.

The story itself is excellent: with many unexpected twists and turns taken from a first person perspective. The artist gave the main character an almost childlike face to set off all the character goes through in the many years the story spans. Things always come full circle and this definitely is true of this moving story.

The book and story were definitely good enough for several rereads to experience the many nuances of the story. In all, highly recommended.

Susan Woodford teaches Greek and Roman art at the University of London and is engaged in research for the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum. It was a pure pleasure to read through Susan Woodford's book "Images of Myths in Classical Antiquity". If you've ever gone to an art exhibit and wondered how anyone could identify which myth the artist is painting or wondered what you're missing, this book is for you. In this book, the author describes how ancient Greek and Roman artists and artisans told "graphic "stories, something akin to "graphic novels" which have recently become quite popular.

The book also goes over the different myths and other stories commonly known to the Greeks and Roman, so that you can more easily recognize them when they show up. Although it becomes very clear early on that it takes a PhD course of study to really become an expert in this area, there are many basics that Woodford teaches that should immensely increase your appreciation and enjoyment of art from any age that makes use of Greek myths and legends. (Most of the gods and heroes and others depicted in Greek pottery are actually labeled! --I never knew that)

The text is extremely well written, containing 17 short themes in which she examines several specimens in depth. One prior reviewer makes a big deal about the black and white photography--he's missing the point. With almost 200 high quality illustrations and images of ancient Greek and Roman pottery and statuary, Woodford has put together a gorgeous book.

Mythology for Visual Learners

I really love this book! Although my interest in Greek pottery inspired me to order it, I have discovered that it is also an excellent way to learn and remember the associated myths. The author, Susan Woodford, has wonderful academic and professional credentials, yet the text is written in clear English. I feel very lucky to have stumbled onto her work.

A masterwork rescued still again....

Lucretius has survived mediocre translation--Martin Ferguson Smith's prose version was Greenblatt's first reading, William Ellery Leonard's in pentameter verse was mine--as well as translation by famous hands: Moliere (now lost), John Evelyn, John Dryden. But we are blessed to have David Slavitt's sonorous and inspired new hexameter version: DE RERUM NATURA: THE NATURE OF THINGS, done by University of California in 2008. "The difference, I hope, is that between talking and singing," Slavitt says, and his version sings with a restrained richness of idiom and rhythm. It allows us to read Lucretius's work not as a versified science lesson but as a true poem, and in his translation we hear, once again, poet meeting poet, and a masterwork rescued still again from the forgetting centuries.

Great book

I didn't finish reading it but this book is the best translation for Lucretius's work. It does a great job of capturing the poetry of Lucretius with its format. Other books use a prose format, which make them difficult to read. David Slavitt's translation here, though, is very easy and enjoyable to read. Anyone casually interested in The Nature of Things should read this book, not any other boring translation.

The author's emphasis in this translation was to make the rhythms and sense SOUND as they do in Latin. My reason for purchase was to ACCESS THE INFORMATION.
