About the Author
Watchman Nee became a Christian in China at the age of 17 and began to write that same year. Through almost 30 years of ministry it was clear that he was a unique gift from the Lord for His church at that time. In 1952 he was imprisoned for his faith and remained in prison until his death in 1972. His words remain as a source of abundant spiritual revelation for Christians all over the world.

Insightful allegorical approach to Genesis. Doesn't dissapoint

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by Watchman Nee is a powerful and illuminating book that provides a basic sketch of the full Christian experience as viewed through the narrative of the patriarchs in Genesis. Nee argues for a deep continuity between the Old and New Testaments which does full justice to the typical and allegorical character of Israel’s formative history. In this regard Nee is following both Scriptural and historical precedent, from Paul to Origen and Augustine, to C. H. Mackintosh and A. W. Pink. Nee is basically arguing that the experiences of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as recorded in Genesis portray the spiritual experiences that the New Testament believers must pass through to fully become God's people. Each of the three patriarchs represent a particular experience of the Triune God--the Father, Son, and Spirit respectively--and the interrelatedness and overlapping narration of their stories indicates that this experience is a continuum with a series of critical conjunctures (e.g. Abraham's circumcision before Isaac's birth).

The basic typological framework Nee constructs is as follows:

Abraham's experience: the promises, standard, and purpose of God

Isaac's experience: the inheritance, enjoyment, and accomplishment of Christ

Jacob's experience: the discipline, constitution, and transformation of the Spirit

The length of treatment given by Nee to each patriarch roughly matches the length of their story and the amount of detail given to them in Genesis. Abraham gets 72 pages, Isaac gets 25 pages, and Jacob gets 62 pages. The intro chapter sets up Nee's premise and perspective and provides a great summary of the main points related to each section.

At 175 pages, this book is well worth your time, especially if you are looking for something more than a historical-critical or historical-grammatical approach to Genesis.

A Christian life should be a balanced life:

Besides Watchman Nee's Normal Christian Life which is based on the book of Romans, this book gives us a vivid and living picture of a normal Christian life which is a balanced, overcoming, and God's ordained life, based on the story of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the book of Genesis. These three persons together characterize three main aspects of a normal Christian life - justified by faith, bestowed all the riches from the father, and transformed to be an over-comer by God's ordained way. The book is really helpful and encouraging in experiencing a balanced Christian life, in understanding God's ordained way, and in bearing cross to follow the Lord in an absolute way.

Looking at the big picture

Using a logical approach, Tristan Vick answers to the ultimate question: "Does God exist?" by taking a step back and asking: "What do you mean by 'God'?", since rarely do people define God in the same manner. The concept of "Ignosticism", though new to me, is probably the best starting point to a better understanding of why religious fundamentalists are wrong. A clear, well-written, down-to-earth explanation of the concept and its multiple repercussions will give the potential reader an new perspective to the question which atheists and believers seem to take for granted.

I absolutely loved this book, and would definitely recommend it to anyone: atheists, agnostics, and believers.

The reason I bought this book is, as an agnostic seeker, to know more about Ignosticism and Theological noncognitivism. I'm really interested in this position, but there are not very much materials about. In fact, there are few contemporary philosophers in religion who talk about theological noncognitivism(as far as I know, only two; Michael Martin and Kai Nielson). So first time I saw this book, I said, "Oh, great! Now I will learn more about Ignosticism and some philosophical argument for that position."

As it turns out, I did. But at the same time, I'm unconvinced, so I can't recommend this book.

Before criticizing this book, I should mention some good things in book. I generally agree with author's observation about theist's way of defining god, especially when he talk about cultural and psychological influence. that part is well-established and backed by references from professionals like Pascal Boyer. I also like his writing style. It makes me easy to understand his argument, or at least make me think that I understand his argument.

That said, I think main argument of the book fails.

Briefly, main argument of this book is like this.
1) If some concept or definition is about real object, It's description has real link to that.
2) If some concept or definition has real link to that, It should pass the Referential Justification.
3) God concept does not pass the Referential Justification.
4) So, God concept is not about real object.
5) As a result, talking about existence of "God" is meaningless(because it can't exist in real world).

Someone who read this review may be curious about premise 1 and say, what does it mean that "having real link to object?" Well, according to the book, it means that the object which is described by the definition is verified, and so its definition is verified by inspecting the object. This means when you want to say that your definition of x has real link to object x, you must show object x is empirically verified and examine your definition with object x.

But the problem of that reasoning is that there are something that supposed to exist, but can't be empirically verified. One example of that thing is "other minds". When I say "mind", I don't mean some dualistic souls which already assumed the supernatural exist, but mean subjective experience dependent on human brain. I know I have a mind. You also does, because you can experience yours. But how about the others? How can we empirically verify other people's subjective experience? You can hear other people's testimony or examine their brain, but eventually don't know whether other people are just like us or philosophical zombie. So this fact makes other minds don't exist? Unless you are a hard skeptic or solipsist, you don't think so, but justification of that is not empirical, but philosophical. The situation is same when we question about existence of world itself(Is this real? or is everything just illusion?), time, abstract object, causality etc. And because of their non-empirical nature, some their definition is also not empirically derived, and some of it like abstract object is entirely non-empirical.

So there are something that supposed to exist, but can't be empirically verified. And even more, there are something that many philosophers think that exist, but has no "real link" to their definition(like God). I think this fact makes whole book in problem, because it seemed to me that the book's hidden premise is this.
0) If something exist, it can be empirically verified.
And If this is false, then premise 1 is also false, so the conclusion of the formula above is also false. So the author has to whether accept that these concepts are also meaningless to discuss like God, or offer some other reason why God concept is meaningless when other non-empirical, philosophical concepts have meaning. Or, he can just admit God concept is, at least, as meaningful as those concepts.

But, I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong, and he is totally right. But there is not much material about this topic and vitually no material about this topic discussed by professional philosopher, I think I can't know who's right even in future.

Excellent treatment of transportation travel demand

This book is intended for serious graduate students who wish to learn demand analysis. This book is used as a text for the demand analysis course at MIT for 1st/2nd year grad students. Rigorous statistical and econometric background is a must preparation for this book. Includes very crisp and elegant proofs and dicussion. Impressive methodological treatment for demand analysis. Although all examples are drawn from the Transportation field, the content can easily be implemented for Marketing Science and other fields.

An overall good book that needs some update and expansion.

Two knowledgable authors gave in-depth treatments on the subject of DCM. The math is fairly easy to follow in most places. The biggest strength is a nice combination of theoretical and practical issues. The readers however should be benefitted from a new edition, which should include, among other things, extended exposures on ordered responses and grouped/aggregated data analyses with DCM. An introduction to the existing software and relevant issues should also be a plus.

Has very detailed contents. So no need to worry if you are not that good at Math. It has a few examples about how to interpret your model outputs. It was a great help for my homework when I was taking a discrete choice modeling class. Actually, it was the designated text book we used for that class.

New Perspectives on the Middle East and Attitudes on the U.S.

There is no shortage of books on the Middle East. Reporters, diplomats, soldiers. politicians and other experts provide their own special takes on what is happening there and why. Phil Karber's Fear and Faith in Paradise gives the reader insights that are not available in any other book. Fear and Faith is the story of his recent travels in Syria, Lebanon, Tehran, Turkey, Morocco and Tunisia at the time of the emergence of the Arab Spring.

In it you will meet Walid, the fixer at the Baron Hotel in Aleppo, and his son Mohammed, Karber's driver in his trek across Syria; Abdullah, the manager of the guest house in Hama; Abdul and his Pontiac Eight racing 90-miles an hour on the Damascus Highway; Ghousson Arnuk, a volunteer with the Syrian Red Crescent and Hani, another volunteer, at a refugee center in Damascus; David Holdridge, director of Mercy Corps Middle East in Beirut, and his wife Annie; Farid Chrabieh, Karber's dragomanon a tour along the Lebanon coast and through the Qadish Valley; Mira Mahdavi, a very independent Iranian woman and Karber's guide through Iran; Sayyid Jousiane, an instructor at an Islamic Shiite seminary; and Idder Mournier, an aspiring politician in Marrakech, to name a few.

In all of his encounters, Karber let's the people he meets speak for themselves, without embellishment or explanation, and lets the readers listen and form their own opinions. Fear and Faith is a tableau of the Middle East and its people, rich in deatail and full of historical facts. The author is a seasoned traveller and not a tourist. The places he visits are not resorts. In Fear and Faith, Karber lets us meet the people who are living through the change and turmoil in the region. He humanizes the communities that he visits and what emerges from this book is a picture of the Middle East that is different from what we see in most media. It is a region filled with "people like us" with perceptions and misconceptions about the U.S. and the West informed by their experiences against the backdrop of revolution, civil war, and uncertainty.

Wide and deep

Reading Fear and Faith has made me a much smarter consumer of daily news from the Middle East and North Africa. Karber travels light, packing a reliable moral compass, an exuberant and extroverted personality, insatiable curiosty, and modest but steadfast courage. Thanks to Karber's fearless pursuit of insight into the complicated situations throughout the region, my grasp of the multifaceted religious, ethnic, geographic and historical factors shaping conflicts there has increased tenfold (and left me wanting to know more). He delights his readers with lyrical descriptions of medinas, mosques, monuments, and mountains. He lets us eavesdrop on illluminating conversations with taxi drivers, guesthouse hosts, international aid workers, displaced persons, and random strangers on trains and busses, giving us real stories of real people in real time. He shares his extensive research on the convoluted history of cities, sects, and situations. In sum, he breaks down the faceless monolith of the Muslim world from Tunesia to Turkey (as presented by so much of our media) and gives us instead a tour both wide and deep in a region of profound significance to our modern world. I reccommend that you make yourself a pot of mint tea and settle down for an amazing and unique trip with Karber as your guide and driver.

Best Travelogue I've Read!

Karber's Fear and Faith in Paradise is the best travelogue I have read. As an avid traveler, I try to read others' accounts of a place before I do my own exploring. Though I have not yet planned my trip to the Middle East, I am so excited to have just finished Fear and Faith. In some ways, I feel like I have been there after reading the book. Not only does Karber do an amazing job of explaining life as an outsider, and about his perceptions looking in, but he also provides a great deal of historical context that educates the reader as they take the journey with him. I encourage everyone to indulge in Karber's fresh perspective, which deviates from what we read in the news media. Can't wait to hear what others think of the book!
