About the Author
Born, 1919 and educated at Brockenhurst School and Christ Church College, Oxford, where he gained his D.Litt. Fellow of All Souls College and of New College, and in 1967-68 was Oxford University Professor of the History of Latin America. From 1968-87 he was Warden of St Anthony's College, Oxford. He has also taught at Boston University, and is an Honorary Fellow of Exeter University. The recipient of decorations from the Spanish and Portuguese governments, he was knighted in 1987.

Disappointed. Misleading title.

While I agree GameSalad itself is not entirely complicated, this book offers very, very little about developing with GS. I found the information it contains about game development good in general -- which is basically the whole book -- but I feel I wasted a good amount of money in hopes of learning the GS environment in more detail. The title is very misleading. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking to learn the application.

Great for all types of gamemakers

We've had GameSalad on our Mac for over a year, and although I love games and consider myself pretty technical, I'm DEFINITELY not a game designer. My kids have spent a lot of time making various games and have taught me a lot about how to use the program and experiment with different behaviors. But they don't know a whole lot about what makes a game fun or interesting. They love making smaller games though but we didn't have a good way to elevate to the next level.

This book is exactly what they needed to learn about different types of games, styles and tricks in creating mechanics, and guided exercises in trying out what they're being taught. For me, the old gamer (Pong anyone?), I get the concepts immediately, and the exercises show me a step-by-step guide to putting together a real example of that concept.

This book is not a pure technical manual, and I can understand the need of that for some people. But for someone like me who loves games and has a lot of reference to what's been fun, it's perfect because I can understand how to convert those fun ideas into something real. And my kids, who 'get' GameSalad already, it's giving them a larger frame to play with and build on.

We're all talking now about what we could design and build together as a bigger game and maybe even release (everything they've done so far has been kept to our own computer). There's even sections on releasing and marketing. Even if we don't get that far, I think we're going to have some great new home built games to build and play with.

Covers the stuff you can't find on You Tube

I started trying to build games with Game Salad for the Mac a couple of years ago because it doesn't need me to do any real programming. I mean, I have to think about how to make things go and in what order they go in, and there's some math involved, but most of the time I can just TELL the program "Move the box to THIS point" rather than having to write it all in a script (which is good because I only just started learning programming at school and we are still doing basic stuff, not game stuff).

There are a couple of other GameSalad books out there, but they either just give instructions on how to make just one kind of game (which doesn't help me so much because the games I want to make are different than the one kind they show) or they are just for mobile phones and stuff, but I want to put my games online like at Kongregate or BubbleBox or some place where my friends can play it.

I can find lots of stuff online already for GameSalad. Stuff like how to make a button or how to make a tree blow up when you shoot it with a laser (in a game of course, everybody knows trees don't "blow up" in real life). What I can't find out online is the "why" you do things this way or that way.

My teacher says that the "why" stuff is what you usually get from taking a class or working with a teacher. This book has helped me a lot with the "why" stuff for GameSalad and for making games. I'm giving it 5 stars because it's helping me learn to build a better game, and it covers the reasons designers choose to do things rather than just being a list of instructions.

GEOFF SHEARD, DPhil, PhD, MBA, BEng, CEng, FIMechE, FRAeS, FASME, FCIBSE is currently Vice President – Fan Technology, with the Flakt Woods Group and a director of Flakt Woods Limited, based in Colchester, UK. Geoff is also a Visiting Fellow at the University of Northampton Business School and a director of the Air Movement and Control Association. He has doctorate degrees from Oxford University in the area of turbomachinery aerodynamics and from the University of Northampton in the area of leadership and team development. He also holds a masters degree in business administration from Cranfield University, a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Liverpool University, and is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers. 

ANDREW KAKABADSE is Professor of International Management Development, Cranfield School of Management, UK. Andrew was the H. Smith Richardson Fellow at CCL, North Carolina, USA and is Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster; Macquarie Graduate School of Management; Thunderbird and at Swinburne University. His research covers boards, top teams and the governance of governments. He has published 32 books, over 200 articles and 18 monographs.

An informative, easy to read overview of autism.

As a mother of three children with physical disabilities, I often find myself involved with families and their children with autism. I wanted to understand what they go through and gain knowledge of the behaviors that the families are challenged with. This book marked my first time to try and educate myself and understand autism. I found this book to be very helpful, simple to read and easy to reference.

This harlequin is a good romance but it needed more to make it complete more of his history and hers as well.

Gentle Introduction to Cassandra

Having worked with many relational and NoSQL databases across multiple web and mobile projects, I was recently in need of a quick introduction to Cassandra. I picked up this and the more advanced Cassandra books from Packt when they were on sale recently.

While a book can quickly get out of date, I've so far found Learning Apache Cassandra is suitable (as of this writing) for getting in and fairly painlessly getting a handle on the basic capabilities and differences between Cassandra and other dbs. I'm particularly interested in learning about table structure, performant schema design, query patterns, and the like. The first few chapters (after the typical getting started/installed stuff), walk through an ongoing example of a twitter-like clone. The author does a decent job of building "features" of the project while tying it back to real world use-cases.

Later chapters discuss basic performance considerations, denormalization, and more complex data representation.

As an introduction and familiarization book, there was enough general detail that it should be useful for a while with respect to versions of Cassandra. It will definitely give you enough to branch out to more advanced books or resources on the web. In general this met my expectations.

For books of this kind to get 5 stars, I like to see how things develop with respect to the book being kept up to date and having "ever green" web resources, so it is too soon to tell on that front.

A good introduction to Apache Cassandra 4.5 Stars

If you have some database development background and wish to get a good solid introduction to Apache Cassandra then you might want to take a look at this book by Mat Brown. Mr. Brown has packed a lot of information on the basics of Cassandra into a 250 page book. The book is very readable, well laid out, has many clear examples and very nice illustrations. I think as a introduction it was a great choice for Mr Brown to use Cassandra's CQL as the programming tool of choice.

What I like to see in the second edition is Authentication and Authorization moved into the beginning of the main book as it is a fact of life. I also would like more read and write consistency example as another reviewer asked. It would be nice if the Table level create options could be covered in an Appendix I think it would be useful for both developers and Admins.

Ok my only warning for potential readers is if you don't have a relational database background it will take you more time to work through the book as Mr Brown uses many comparisons of Casandra features to relational systems.

Thanks to Mat, this book is awesome. I read almost all the books on Cassandra available, and somehow I missed this one. This happens to be my latest reading.
One question I have for Mat on Pp 170 of the book. While the diagram seems to be correct, the explanation between the two diagrams on this page, for me, looks incorrect. I could be mistaken.

In my opinion the explanation should say Alice is on Node3, Bob is on Node1 and Ivan is on Node2

Am I missing something. If any one could clarify I would appreciate it.

Awesome book!

This is a very special book for several reasons.
First, it is well written. So, the reader won't feel tired reading it. Yes, this textbook is not tedious.

Even though the material covered is difficult, the author writing style and the graphic presentation make labor economics interesting.

Last, but not least, this is a very comprehensive book and can even be used as a reference book for undergraduates interested in other topics that use the same tools as Labor Economics.

Interesting but riddled with typos

A very interesting little book that tells the story of every major technological advance since 1500. Each 'chapter' is just the right length to read whilst performing a certain daily ritual. The book is let down by poor sub-editing and is riddled with typos, which become annoying after a while.

In 625, A.D., two leading figures of the Ulema brotherhood wrote the Book of Ramadosh; a compilation of Ana'kh terminology, a lexicon, and Kiraats (Readings).
Ulema AL Bakr stated that the Ulema are not member of a religious group. They are neither Muslim nor members of any organized religion.
In fact, they were persecuted by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, and were expelled from the Arab Peninsula. They found refuge in Cyprus and Marseille.
But the honorable Ulema was quick to point out that the early Sufi masters, poets and Sufi trance dancers were Ulema.
He added that Ulema should not be confused with the Islamic Ulema who teach Islamic law, or with the Allamah who were the leading Islamic figures of science and letters in medieval times.
Farid Tayarah, an Ulema himself, and a former head of a Masonic Lodge stated that the Ana'kh was used during Masonic sessions and services. He added that a considerable number of Masonic words and expressions are pure Ana'kh, especially those words referring to levels and degrees in Freemasonry, and initiation ceremonies.

Rubbish

Sumerian is nowadays relatively well understood, the Anunnaki language never existed.
Conclusion: do not buy this rubbish. If you want an introduction into cuneiform get a teaching grammar of Huehnergard, Streck (German) or Worthington.

What the heck.. Not all of the Sumerian Language is understood let alone any of the Anu-nnaki.. How can you have this.. Sorry but Im not really gonna suggest anyone buy this until all of the sumerian language is deciphered yikes
