Good intro to banking functions

The first part of the book covers the functions involved in investment banking. It covers the differences between commercial and investment banking. It's very good on how investment bankers earn their money. It justifies their value to the business world. It's sparse on legislation and capital requirements. It's vague on what can constitute a bank asset, but I suppose that's realistically reflective of regulation uncertainty. There is nothing on the inordinate political power wielded by large investment banks. There is a section on corrupt practices, but banker bashing is not the purpose of the book.

The second half contains cookbook formulas for risk investment written from a banking point of view that seeks to investigate potential operating improvement rather than emphasizing current value. The formulas don't include the important dividend coverage ratio. My guess is that's because it's important for dividend investors, but not so much for bankers interested in company valuation.

There is history of success and failure of banking institutions like Goldman Sachs and Lehman. It cites LTCM as the first instance of a bailout on the basis of "too big to fail." There is a good section defining market sectors.

While this book for "dummies" can be classified as a beginners guide it is very informative and far from trivial. One value of the book is that it can be read peace meal with a more careful reading deferred. It's a good reference for sources of data. It's a fine layman's introduction to investment banking functions. It's good background for understanding the plethora of books being written about the role of banking in recent recessions and past depressions. I don't think it contains adequate operating knowledge to enter the banking business; at least not with one's own money.

For someone who wants to know how an investment bank operates in as an easy read you should get this book. One thing that is great about this book as well is that it is not very technical and the writer finds ways to describes certain theories easily understandable

Step 2. Admit the problem—our sin and separation

God did not create us like robots to automatically love and mechanically obey him. God gave us a will and the freedom to choose. The first man and woman chose to disobey God and go their own willful way. And we still make that choice today. This results in separation from God.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death.” Romans 6:23

People have tried many ways to bridge this gap between themselves and God.

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Proverbs 14:12

“Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God…” Isaiah 59:2

No bridge reaches God… except one.

Step 3. Discover God’s bridge—the cross

Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the grave. Though he was God’s sinless Son, he became a human, took our place, and paid the penalty for our sin, bridging the gap between God and us.

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”1 Timothy 2:5

“Christ… suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.” 1 Peter 3:18

We must trust Jesus Christ as our Savior and receive him by personal choice.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

The Bible says…

“To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.” John 3:36

Will you receive Jesus Christ right now and trust in him alone for forgiveness and eternal life? The Bible says that’s the only way to find peace with God!

• Be willing to turn from trusting in anything else for eternal life and trust only in Christ.
• Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross, came back to life from the grave, and is your only way to heaven.
• Accept Jesus’ offer to forgive your sins and come into your life as your Savior.

You may want to tell him in words like these:

“Dear Jesus, thank you for making it possible for me to find peace with God! I believe that when you died you were paying the penalty for my sins. I now receive you into my life as my Savior, so I can have forgiveness and never-ending life from God! Thank you for the gift of eternal life!”

Great little tract!

Fabulous option for a tract to leave as a tip at a restaurant, etc. I use it in packs I give to homeless or other people who may be requesting help/money on sides of roads, etc. I put these along with hygiene products, food gift cards, etc. to give them something other than cash that could potentially be abused. I find them to be a great, short little message.

I love these Bible tracts! A great idea is to use these with junior high or high school kids. I love to make something I call Jesus packets and pass them out to them when they get out. You can use cellophane gift bags, and put a tract in it. And I'm going to put a glow bracelet or glow stick and a few glow stars in each packet. All kids love glow things. :) Also some oatmeal peanut butter cookies that I make that are great! It's a brilliant idea I think. Comprehensive coverage of the field

At the outset one might expect this book to be pure about motion planning or motion control. In reality the book is remarkably comprehensive in coverage of perception, planning and control with in-depth coverage of basic kinematics, basic planning mechanisms and applied estimation such as Kalman filters for robot perception. The book was written/edited by the first authors with in-depth coverage in particular chapters by the other authors. In the end it is a very coherent, up-to-date and comprehensive book. The book is written to have enough detail for a 1 term senior under-graduate or junior graduate course in robotics or as a reference for practitioners. Truly a great book

Excellent book

It is excellent book that gives contemporary presentation of the main topics of robots motion. It provides both clear explanations of the underlying principles and accurate algorithms and methods, which can be directly applied for the robots control. I use this book as one of the main sources for the course in mobile robots and as a handbook for research projects, and higly recommend it for everyone who deals with modern robotic systems.

This is a great book on mobile robotics, a lot of methods are explained in the book and its writing is clear and easy to understand. I have used it on several undergraduate and graduate courses that I have taken, I fully recommend it.

About the Author

Originally hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Ian Molyneaux ended up in IT purely by chance after applying for an interesting looking job advertised as "junior computer operator" in the mid '70s. The rest is history, 30 years later I've held many roles in IT, although I've shied away from anything management related as I'm a techie at heart. His current role is EMEA SME (Subject Matter Expert) for Application Performance Assurance at Compuware. Presently residing in Buckinghamshire, U.K. with wife Sarah, daughter Sasha, and two cats, and trying to get used to the idea of turning 49!

Good Primer, Lacks Depth

This well-written primer provides just enough information to help one get started with automated performance testing. It outlines several recommended practices to automating performance testing (e.g., user activity recording, deploying software monitors, etc) and describes how some of them were put to use in two case studies and how they helped in root cause analyses. It discusses desirable capabilities to look for in performance testing tools and only briefly mentions special considerations for technologically complex applications such as those that use AJAX, SAP, or Citrix, for example. A more in-depth discussion of those considerations and how to address them would have been really useful. Although information on select tool vendors and the type of tool offerings they provide is included, there is no additional description of any of the tools' capabilities or qualities (for this, the reader has to visit the provided vendor's website). Finally, most of the sample scenarios discussed in the book pertain to performance testing in Windows environments; while this won't matter to most readers because the principles discussed are equally applicable to other OS environments, this may matter to some readers who do not work with Windows environments at all.

Good Overview For Managers

As I've mentioned in my reviews of Effective Software Testing: 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your Testing and Implementing Automated Software Testing: How to Save Time and Lower Costs While Raising Quality, I recently became the manager of my company's automated and performance testing team. My background had previously been in application development, and I purchased this book to get an overview to performance testing. For the most part The Art of Application Performance Testing was a good choice. The core of the book is in chapters 2-4 where the author discusses the fundamentals of performance testing, the process of performance testing, and analyzing the results of a performance test. There were times when I didn't exactly follow some Molyneaux's thought process so I didn't get 100% of the material. This meat and potatoes section of the book is also only about 90 pages so it wouldn't have hurt to have a little more explanation. The biggest example of this was the example he gave where he calculated the virtual user numbers for an application that was going to have an increase in concurrent users. The table with the current production numbers and the numbers for the test seemed to drop out of the air with minimal explanation. This surprised me a bit because I rarely have difficulty following technical books. The other issue I had with this book is one that should never happen. A number of the tables and charts used fonts that were too small to be readable. I have 20/20 near vision, and I have never had a problem with a technical book like this. The final consideration I would offer readers is the price in comparison to the size of the book. The chapter material tops out at 114 pages, and I would say that the cover price of the book is probably overpriced by about 30-40%. Perhaps the author thought that the lack of already published material on this subject merited the higher cost.

It may seem that my comments to mesh with the number of starts that I gave the book. In the end the two material issues I had with the book did not keep me from achieving the purpose I set out with when I bought the book. I know have a good understanding of performance testing so it was worth the investment even if I consider it to have been a little higher than necessary. People who do performance testing as their day to day activity will only find a base level of knowledge here. This is not a stopping point if you are looking to build up your performance testing skills. I would almost put this in the "for managers" category.

Great reference

Though this book is geared towards Quality Assurance testers, developers can take away a lot from this material. The book explains methodologies at a high level and remains vendor-agnostic which is nice, but the context always seems to hover around Windows. If it were not for the specific case studies (which seem like they are from the author's personal experience) I would have to say this book would be more on the boring side.

The author did a great job of "teaching a man to fish" instead of "giving a man a fish". For example, in chapter 2, instead of simply giving a list of tools and telling readers to try them, the author goes into details about what to look for in a performance testing tool and how to choose one based on the scenario.

I would recommend this text to anyone who is new to testing as a great introduction, but I would suspect that experienced testers would also gain some insight from it as well.
