About the Author

Sir Adam Roberts is President of the British Academy, Senior Research Fellow of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University, and Emeritus Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford University. His main academic interests are in the fields of international security, international organizations, and international law (including the laws of war). He has also worked extensively on the role of civil resistance against dictatorial regimes and foreign rule, and on the history of thought about international relations. Professor Robert's is the co-editor of The United Nations Security Council and War (OUP 2008), Documents on the Laws of War (OUP 2000), and Hugo Grotius and International Relations (OUP 1992).

Timothy Garton Ash is Professor of European Studies at Oxford University, Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford University, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is the author of eight books of political writing or 'history of the present' which have charted the transformation of Europe over the last quarter-century. His essays appear regularly in the New York Review of Books and he writes a weekly column in the Guardian which is widely syndicated in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Throughout the nineteen eighties, he reported and analyzed the emancipation of Central Europe from communism in contributions to the New York Review of Books, the Independent, the Times, and the Spectator.

Academics, good subject but boring

Let's be honest, in general there is nothing worse than a collection of essays by academics on ANY subject. This book may be a bit better than most because civil resistance is more interesting than most subjects but these are still academics and they are paid to be boring. Read the book if you have to or if you have an extreme interest in this subject. Otherwise, take the afternoon off, go to a good movie.

A very powerful book

This book describes and critiques non-violent civil resistance movements from throughout the world including those that succeeded - such as the struggle for Indian independence and the U.S. civil rights movement - as well as those that did not such as in Northern Ireland from 1967 to 1972 or the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in the People's Republic of China. The authors of the essays identify some of the more typical non-violent tactics, strategies and concepts which I will overly simplify into three areas.

First there is non-violence as a deeply felt commitment, as good itself and something to strive for no matter what the outcome. Gandhi in British India and Martin Luther King in the United States are two of the most obvious examples. Both men understood that the power of the repressive state rests on the obedience of their citizens (or subjects) and that the active withdrawal of this consent will cause increasing instability in the regime. The "Saffron Revolution" led by Buddhist monks in Burma may be the purest example: Theravada Buddhism, followed by 90% of the Burmese population, permits only a non-violent approach to problem-solving. Monks are instructed that any word they speak and any action they take not only does no harm to others but also can bring about a positive change in reaction in even the most implacable enemies.

Secondly is non-violence as a tactic that had to be adopted due to a precarious military, economic or political situation. Lech Walesa in Poland understood that surrounded by Warsaw Pact troops and with the 1968 intervention into Czechoslovakia fresh in memories throughout eastern and central Europe that he and the strikers at the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk had to walk a very fine line to keep the tanks on the other side of the Polish border. They succeeded although they had to endure the imposition of martial law by Polish general Wojciech Jaruzelski which resulted in the extra-judicial incarceration of many Solidarity leaders and cadres but which a majority of people in Poland still think was the only way to stop intervention by surrounding troops. Northern Ireland in the years prior to the 1969 decision to send the British Army into Derry and Belfast was a very different story. Inspired by the U.S. civil rights movement the non-IRA resistance in Northern Ireland tried marches, demonstration, sit-ins and strikes but the fierce opposition of the entrenched establishment to any change and that of the Provisional IRA to anything other than immediate and complete change meant they would fail. The numbers tell the story: in 1967 no one was killed in Ulster as a result of political violence; 497 people were killed in 1972 in the conflict.

The third reason for non-violent resistance to an oppressive regime is as part of establishing a moral basis for a new society. This takes an even longer view than the first two, projecting past the end of the oppressive government to its replacement with a more just society with guarantees of individual rights. Chile from 1983 to 1988 is a good example. Chile has been committed to the rule of law and a robust, independent civil society since independence in 1830 with elected civilian governments interrupted only twice--from 1927 to 1931 and then in 1973 when Pinochet overthrew the socialist government. The Communist Party and the Socialist Party put aside their differences in the face of the extreme repression and terror from the Pinochet military rulers when the economy shuddered to a halt in 1982. They mobilized their constituencies among workers, students and professionals while working with grassroots organizations created by the Catholic Church during the worst of the security crackdowns following the coup, creating a very broad base for elections which the government called and that, to its dismay, lost. The coalitions that were built during the underground and then open organizing were the basis of a policy of truth and justice for crimes committed during the Pinochet administration for the elected governments that came after the end of the dictatorship.

These three sets of concepts and strategies of non-violent resistance are not, of course, exhaustive or mutually exclusive but are methods and reasons for opposition to repression that were identified by the authors of the essays in "Civil Resistance and Power Politics". It is a book well worth owning for its breadth of coverage, hitting not only the most famous rebellions but others that we can learn from such as the Carnation Revolution in Portugal of 1975 that ended several decades of fascist rule or the unusual intersection of ethnic nationalism and peaceful protest in the Baltic nations during the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Great Resource

I find that I generally don't agree with the conclusions drawn in this book, but it provides many resources of other relevant material that should prove very fruitful for anyone studying nonviolent resistance. Generally speaking, instead of comparing non-violent resistance to other forms of resistance in judging its effectiveness, it judges these resistance movements against an idealized outcome of the writers own imagination. This narrative tends to minimize the over all goals and visions of these movements and their leaders and focuses instead on short term political outcomes only. While thought provoking, the analysis thus provided is flawed at best. I knew all this before I purchased the book. The works cited, further reading, and bibliography are worth the cost of a good used copy.

Pretty Strange

So basically in the 400+ pages or whatever (it's been a couple months since I've read it), Graham is simply saying the following: the human archaetype of going under a massive dose of dissociative drugs is the same as meeting interdimensional beings who charade as aliens, doctors or faeries. That's pretty much all I got from the book. Going under the same dissociative near-blackout phase, I can attest that I've been the subject of several doctors standing above me. Was I scared? Not really. Did I know that I was hallucinating? Mostly. Ego death can come and go in that state depending on how attuned you are to the experience....similar to being able to spark a lucid dream. This has happened to me repeatedly prior to my reading the book, so I can attest that his story/reports are not lies and seem to truly be an archaetype since it's happened to me MORE than once.

What made Homo sapien sapien become symbolic?

Just finished Graham Hancock's "Supernatural" exploring what happened 35,000 years ago that made Homo sapien sapien all of a sudden start creating symbolic representations (art) on the inside of cave walls? More than that, why such strange images that can best be viewed as representing a shaman's journey?

Well, everything gets much funkier as Hancock compare's ancient cave art with modern "archaic" plant medicine practices from Siberia and the Amazon. Then throws in fairy lore and alien abduction. It sounds like a fringe mix of subjects, off-putting at best, but his deeper point becomes an study in how the structural aspects of these disparate experiences partake of a common matrix once the "skin" (surface symbology) is minimized thru a conceptual "x-ray" analysis. Ultimately, the book's conclusions about consciousness and alternative realities are something else quite unexpected!

One conclusion follows that of Jeremy Narby (The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge) ->our DNA consists of approximately 3% coding for genes and 97% which codes for ??? When mathematical analysis is performed on this so-called "junk", it shows statistical distribution characteristics identical to human languages in terms of the "code set" distribution. It has all the characteristics of a constructed semantic system. So it appears as if our DNA is an extended message. To whom? "Us" of the technological present able to decode DNA stands with our machines? Or any human, any where, anytime, in altered states - such as shamans or those who have taken plant medicines? These messages are from whom?

The proposition independently reached by Crick and Watson (co-discoverers of DNA) is that there was never enough time between the cooling of Earth's surface and the appearance of fully functional single celled organisms for the complex system of DNA/RNA replication to have evolved from random mutations and molecular collisions in the "primal soup". On top of that, the DNA system appears almost unchanged throughout all of the phyla of life. Evolution may change physical form, but an organisms genetic mechanism (the DNA/RNA system) has not evolved or changed. The only conclusion that can explain this is that life was introduced to the earth some 4 billion years ago from an outside source. (This is the theory of Panspermia.)

If life on Earth was an alien creation, then it is not a difficult step to envision that the semantic messages in DNA are part of an alien technology to store and transmit information, perhaps forming the basis of instinct, morphic fields, mythic stories, archaic knowledge, and flashes of insight. A technology that can create holographic (trance and dream) experiences. Perhaps teaching us to become human (directed evolution)? Teaching us to enfold ourselves into a symbolic awareness of the world.

Or...

The alternate conclusion (which Hancock leans more strongly towards) is based upon accepting the notion of alternate realities as real. We live in a quantum hyperverse and all it takes is to "retune" the brain (chemically or by ritual) to reach ("read") nearby alternate dimensions - the realm of the spirits, ancestors, plant teachers, fairies, aliens and so forth.

So in this case, the DMT machine elves of McKenna, the power animals and shape-shifting transmutations of shamans, the alien abduction encounters of the modern era, and the fairies of old are all culturally-inflected "skins" placed by consciousness on the extended range of (electromagnetic?) frequencies perceived during trance, trip, dream and death(?)... We are perceiving all of these beings residing normally in alternate dimensions in this multiverse.

The Buddhist vision of endless worlds with innumerable sentient beings is seemingly in agreement on this.

Fascinating but incomplete

This is a very thorough, long, and detailed book that attempts to link cave paintings, hallucinogens, the birth of religion and arts, and the emergence of UFOs and aliens in a kind of "theory of everything." The problem, however, is in attempting to tie together all of these ideas, Hancock skips over what are obvious holes. I assume he knows these are problems but to keep the story consistent, Hancock has to make simplifying assumptions and ignore them. For instance, Supernatural posits that people undergoing alien abductions are probably in the small percentage of people who have spontaneous "trips" with natural DMT in our bodies. Yet if we consider some of the classic, most important, and most famous UFOs abduction cases like Betty and Barney Hill and the Alagash four, the Supernatural theory does not seem to fit these at all. The Hills and Alagash four are multi-person, simultaneous abduction reports and it is for this reason, among others, they are among the most credible. But the natural DMT theory suggested by Supernatural appears useless here. In this case, Supernatural considers only the "forward" travel of gifted and/or tripping humans (e.g., shamans) into supernatural realms. Why can't the reverse be true? Why can't those aliens, elves, fairies, etc. enter our "normal" world tripping? Hancock makes an excellent case that supernatural beings have been entering our mental world for thousands of years as long as we're tripping, naturally or artificially. There seems to be an equally compelling case, if these aliens are as intelligent as many human trippers claim, for aliens to trip into our world. In fact, at about the same time the modern UFO era started, Westerners were also experimenting with LSD, DMT, psilocybin, etc. Is this a coincidence? Namely, Westerners were intruding on supernatural realms with no particular respect for them and not knowing what they would find and perhaps that, more than the arrival of the nuclear age which many ufologists have suggested, accounts for the sudden interest in our world by alien-looking species. Perhaps a gray is what tripping spirits look like to us when they enter our world. I can only wonder what we must look like to them when we enter their world. Anyhow, Supernatural is very original and highly readable, well worth the money and time. I learned a lot and I strongly recommend this book.

Reads Like Extended Footnotes

One of the dilemmas researchers have is how to make their material accessible for a broader audience than just their peers.

Given the potential consequences of nuclear proliferation and the complexity of the issues, one would hope experts in this field could summarize issues in a way that policy makers (and the public) can understand and take action.

Unfortunately the author (who I respect tremendously,) and the book fails- the author provides a laundry list of facts and fails to integrate them in a coherent whole.

Nuclear weapons complex
Trying to describe the dangers of proliferation without putting centrifuges in context of a weapons complex assumes the reader is a domain expert like the author. In the 244 pages of the book there wasn't a single description of the components of a weapons complex.

It would have been helpful to start with the U.S. Manhattan Project and describe and diagram what were the key facilities necessary for a Plutonium weapon. How were these facilities different for a U-235 weapon? Why did we and other countries choose both?

This introduction could have been done in a 2 pages and a simplified diagram of the U.S. nuclear weapons complex.

Nuclear weapons Design
The goal of fissile material production is a weapon. Using U-235 versus plutonium has benefits and drawbacks. What are they? Why are fusion weapons harder to produce?

This introduction to the weapons could have been done in a 1/2 page with a diagram of the two types of fission weapons and a third showing a fusion device.

U-235 Separation Choices
Why did the U.S. initially use electromagnetic separation versus thermal, to produce U-235? Why has centrifuge separation for U-235 become the current method of U-235 production for proliferators?

This introduction could have been done in 2 pages and a diagram.

Centrifuges
Amazingly the book lacks a diagram of the components that make up a centrifuge. Yet the numbingly long list of centrifuge parts are thrown out to the reader without context. ([...] and the NRC have simplified diagrams, so do many others.)

This didn't have to be a huge section of the book, 5 pages would have sufficed, but it would have turned the mind-numbing laundry list of facts into a coherent story.

Centrifuge separation plant
The core of this book is how Pakistan used illicit trade to build their centrifuge separation plant and closes with Iran about to complete theirs. Unbelievably nowhere in the book is a diagram of the subsystems that make up of a centrifuge separation plant. Yet a key part of the book is the litany of vendors and individuals who contributed to the illicit trade in these subsystems. Where was Leybold-Heraeus's vacuum systems used? Without a diagram these are gratuitous facts without context.

Then how are centrifuges assembled into cascades? How many are needed to get to enriched uranium? To weapons grade?

As this is the heart of the book, 5 pages with a diagram would have allowed the reader to follow the story of not only the Pakistani effort, but understood Iran's progress to date.

Iran
Iran's progress in enriching fuel would be understandable to a layman if there had been a canonical diagram of a separation plant. Then the author could have used it to show their progress year by year. No wonder policy makers and the public are confused.

People/Company Relationships
The author has mined the literature for a list of people and companies who are at the heart of the proliferation scheme. Chapter Two "Pakistan Gets the Bomb" is everything that's wrong with this book. It tells the story of Pakistan and Khan's network in acquiring centrifuge and separation plants components. But it reads like an extended set of footnotes - wonderful for a researcher, but unbelievably tedious an inaccessible to anyone not filing a police report.

All it would have taken is a flow chart, org chart of or some visual way to connect the cast of characters and company's.

Summary
If this book had been marketed as a scholarly research paper I would have rated it much differently (4-stars) than one with a glossy cover and a mass-market title.

My suggestion to the author; you are a great researcher. But if the intent is to reach more than your peers who are experts in WMD and proliferation you need to be able to tell this story simply. Assume you were briefing a member of congress who wasn't a proliferation expert. You have 30 minutes and you want them to understand and remember the issues. It can be done with five diagrams.

Try drawing them and revise the book.

A good informative overview of the spread of nuclear weapons.

A nice and necessary read about the spread of nuclear weapons. A.Q. Khan certainly did a number on the world. Khan took a 1970s design centrifuge and basically brought it to Pakistan to enrich uranium. He also bought parts for the enrichment process. The Chinese gave the Pakis the plans for the bomb, and wallah, the Islamic world has a nuclear member. Then to compound the issue, he offers it to every other jerk country in the world. These are the stellar members of the world community....North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libia, and apartheid South Africa. Of course if one of these countries every use these devices, then millions will die. That is A.Q. Khan, and his cohorts should be hunted down, and treated as war criminals. This includes the German brokers who made millions out of selling this technology.

If you read this book, you might wonder why people don't get mad at these individuals who have made the world insecure. They endangered the world's peace, so they could get rich.

How the Third World gets nuclear weapons.

Tech Historian has written a review about what is not in the book, and generally I agree that the book would have benefitted from Tech Historian's suggested additions to the book. However, I'm writing a review about the book that David Albright did write, a book about nuclear weapons proliferation in Pakistan, North Korea, South Africa, Iran and Libya.

The book is well organized; it deals with each country in a separate chapter so that you can keep track of the narrative for that country. The chapters are arranged in such a way that the story of one country is informed by information given in previous chapters about other countries. As you read each chapter, a larger narrative unfolds, linking together the activities of engineers, salesman, arms dealers, and politicians in a dozen countries. The book solidly achieves its purpose of knitting together thousands of details into one coherent, understandable story spanning decades and continents.

The book is written in a straightforward, clear accessible style. It seems to me (I'm not an expert on the subject) thoroughly researched, completely accurate, detailed and informative. Each sentence provides a piece of information; there is no filler. The research in each chapter is supported by dozens of references. Clearly David Albright has done his homework and he knows inside and out what he has written about.

If you want to know how impoverished countries such as North Korea or Pakistan, (and soon Iran), got nuclear weapons and how close we are to terrorists armed with nuclear weapons, then you'd do well to read this book. I hope you do.

A very poor introduction to one of the most fascinating eras in philosophy's history

Given how clearly this book is written, it's a real pity it's not very good. I read this book with a view to giving it undergraduate students as a light introduction to medieval philosophy, instead I've had to add it to the category "Do not read, as it will seriously mislead!" The book is incredibly superficial and skips over many central issues (and all the while mixing modern and medieval ontology as if there's no difference). The chapter on the medieval problem of universals is extremely superficial, and still managed to wander away from the central issue. All of two and a half pages are devoted to the treatment of universals in the High Middle Ages, one of the central philosophical issues of the day. Aquinas gets about one third of a page, Duns Scotus about half a page, whereas Ockham gets nearly an entire page. Needless to say, this is a weak and almost pointlessly brief treatment of one of the most important philosophical debates between the 12th to 14th centuries. You'll find a far deeper discussion of this topic in most books of medieval Church history, or in any book that touches on mediaeval thought in any way. Koterski's introduction is perhaps best avoided (unless you're into Radical Orthodoxy, in which case it's a definite step up!)

Instead of this book I would recommend: John Marenbon's Medieval Philosophy: A Historical and Philosophical Introduction [which is informative, and philosophically rich], or Anthony Kenny's [remarkably clear and compelling] Medieval Philosophy (volume 2 of A New History of Western Philosophy) or Armaund Maurer's classic text Medieval Philosophy [which is hard to beat for its depth and clarity].

Readable Jesuit intro to medieval philosophy

Father Joe Koterski SJ, a Jesuit philosopher at Fordham University, authors this highly readable little monograph on medieval philosophy. As a former philosophy graduate student who struggles to stay awake when I read most contemporary philosophy books, I can tell you that much current philosophy is badly written. But Koterski shows here that good scholarship is never an excuse for poor, lazy, or self-aggrandizing writing. This book, emphasizing Aquinas among others, is one of the rare modern-day philosophy textbooks that is a pleasure rather than a headache to read. It would be nice to see it in an undergraduate or Masters-level medieval course.

While it's true that Koterski simplifies medieval philosophy quite a bit here, synthesizing its key principles in a way that may be too neat for some scholars, I personally appreciated this approach very much. And a good teacher can push back against this highly accessible text, jumping off from it into more complex discussions as helpful. Of course, Father Koterski also comes at this material from a robust Catholic perspective, and that interpretation might be what is setting some earlier reviewers off here. Nevertheless, none of us has a copyright on the interpretation of the medieval scholastic philosophers, and there are many valid ways to interpret them. As far as I can tell, Koterski's only sin is that he fails to accept a certain secular consensus of interpretation in parts of the book, but his take is quite valid. Don't let ideology scare you off from reading this one: It's quite good.

The Basics

ThinkAgain (see below) was too hard on this book. It's better than one-star.

"An Introduction to Medieval Philosophy" was written to give beginners an overview of the basic themes and problems that shaped medieval philosophy (the subtitle is "Basic Concepts"). Separate chapters deal with subjects such as God, universals, morality, and the like. The writing is clear. I especially liked the summary of natural law.

That said, philosophy students will not get much from the book, since no argument is unpacked in depth. History students will get more out of it, but even they might be disappointed by the arrangement of topics (thematic not chronological) and by the absence of biographic or social background information. Maybe theology students would be the best audience, or anyone else wondering about the support that reason can lend to religious faith.

I'm just an interested layman who wanted a painless introduction to medieval philosophy and theology. The book suited me fine. If nothing else, it showcases the diversity and creativity of medieval philosophy, and will inspire many readers to delve further into the subject. Maybe that's all we should expect from an introduction.

this book is excellent. It is the basis of my new business

So that you understand whether my observations might be a value to you. I am a complete novice about wholesaling. My wife had suggested i attend several seminars and the topic looking at starting a business together. Also have discussed what it takes with people who do it for a living. That being said, this book is excellent. It is the basis of my new business. After reading it you know needs to be done and when. Lots of pointers and where to look for answers. The book is what the title says a beginners guide and the author does an excellent job.

There’s a ton of value in this book. This book is easy to read and understand and will be an excellent resource to refer back to when I will be actually investing. A plethora of real estate knowledge all in one book. This book gives you step by step instructions right from finding a property to closing the deal and earning a handsome profit. Highly recommended!

I wanted a better understanding of the real estate market as a whole and this book delivered the information that I was looking for. After reading this book, my husband and I are seriously considering getting into the wholesaling real estate market. This book provides all the tools needed to be successful.

The book itself was easy to read and comprehend. The examples used were also very easy to understand. The book gave many great suggestions on increasing the value of a property. We will use these suggestions when we get ready to put our home on the market.

I'm looking forward to taking what I have learned from this book and turning it into cash!!

Lorraine Nordmann is an experienced beauty therapist and lecturer. She is a senior tutor at Hugh Baird College, Liverpool and an experienced external verifier for the City and Guilds. Lorraine has consulted with HABIA (Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority) on the change in the syllabus requirements of the Beauty Therapy NVQs.

Alex Zotos was born into the world of beauty. His mother; an internationally renowned model; opened her school Â"Elly LukasÂ", in 1954 when women were not given many opportunities to be outwardly confident. As Principal of Elly Lukas College, he has kept his finger on the industry pulse globally and contributed to the industry in a positive and entrepreneurial manner. Alex has been a member of the International Spa Association (USA) education committee, Vice Chairperson of CIDESCO Schools Australia and Member of the Curriculum Maintenance Managers Board.

An indispensible guide for level 2 Beauty Therapy

As a Lecturer of Beauty Therapy I have found this book indispensible as a reference both for planning lessons and for my students for City and Guilds NVQ2 Beauty Therapy. I have met Lorraine Nordmann (an External Verifier for City and Guilds) whilst I was assessing students; and found her to be both exacting and knowledgeable. This book matches the teaching standards perfectly and so is ideal for students and Lecturers alike. There are clear learning objectives in all sections; and the book is easy for students to read too.
