excellent introduction, not only for media students!

There are dozens of books on popular culture and its relation to gender and identity issues out there, but this one is extraordinary: concise, up-to-date, and very readable. Mr Gauntlett wrote not only an introduction to the main theories of popular culture like Giddens, Foucault or queer theory - he illustrated all the discussed theoretical concepts with recent examples like movies, TV series, music, websites, and magazines.
If you are a student of media studies and always wanted to know how popular culture influences our lifestyles and our concepts of gender and identity - grab this book! It is well written and clearly structured with plenty of cross-references and suggestions for further reading. A unique feature is the accompanying website where additional material can be found.

Media, Gender and Identity: An Introduction (2nd ed.)

The language is accessible and the ideas enlightening, (although the author has a terribly annoying fondness for the word 'whilst'). I am just a little over half way through the book, but I am pleased so far at what seems to be the conciseness of this overview of gender, media and identity. This book is perfect for a beginner like myself.

While the text provides an informative stance on ELL education for teachers without a base knowledge, the text is repetitive with its statistics and facts, and presents little methodology to support the claims. This book would be a better read for a pre-service teacher who has not taken any courses on ELL instruction or an administrator who is trying to incorporate ELL instruction into professional development.

Choolwe Mudenda Choolwe fondly known as Pastor Choolwe is Founder and President The Gospel Invasion Incorporated aka Gospel Envoys, which is one of the fastest growing Christian organizations, with an ever widening network of churches, campus and professionals’ fellowships, currently head quartered in Zambia.

He is also founding chairman and CEO of the Michael Mark Group of Companies. Choolwe is a graduate in Business Administration, Theology and Leadership at different levels. About the Author
Mark L. Knapp is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus and a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the editor of Human Communication Research (1980-83); an Eastern Communication Association Scholar (1982-83); an ICA Fellow (1980); and an NCA Distinguished Scholar. The Mark L. Knapp Award for career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication is awarded annually by the National Communication Association. He received teaching awards from two professional associations and four different universities. He was the President of ICA (1975-76); NCA (1989-90); the Association for Communication Administrators (1996-97); and the University of Texas chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (2001-03). He chaired the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas from 1989-1996 and 2000-2001. Four of his books are: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IN HUMAN INTERACTION; INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS; LYING AND DECEPTION IN HUMAN INTERACTION and THE HANDBOOK OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION.

Judith A. Hall is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University. She has published widely on topics in nonverbal communication, especially accuracy in perceiving nonverbal cues. She has been Editor of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior and is currently one of its Associate Editors. She is author of NONVERBAL SEX DIFFERENCES: COMMUNICATION ACCURACY AND EXPRESSIVE STYLE, co-editor of INTERPERSONAL SENSITIVITY: THEORY AND MANAGEMENT with Frank J. Bernieri, and co-editor of the HANDBOOK OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION with Mark L. Knapp.

Terrence G. Horgan is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Michigan-Flint.
