AJN Book of the Year Award Winner!

This book recieved a 2003 AJN Book of the Year Award. Now that I have digested it, I understand why my mentor gave it to me. I am an MSN student, but this book is a must read for all those involved in nursing education. That includes both faculty and students. The writing style holds one's interest. The topic of critical thinking can be so incredibly dry. This book is anything but dry. It's fabulous."

Adult Learning - This Is The Best!

I am a hospital nurse educator, and was recently challenged by my medical director (not a nurse but a huge team player) to gear all my programs to strengthen critical thinking in nurses. We as nurses can be so task oriented as a result of being so busy and gearing our strengths to meet our immense immediate demands. This book was outstanding in giving me ideas to use as I teach nurses (and myself) to reach that part of the brain that "really thinks", synthesizes and applies. I personally have felt a "new" part of my brain stimulated. For me, a nurse with 30 years in the field, this approach feels fresh and relevant.

Excellent Reference Book on Learning How to Become a Critical Thinker

This book is excellent for the concepts and ideas discussed in this book can be applied not only to nursing but to any profession in which is required a higher level of though. I liked reading this book a lot for critical thinking is the most important skill a health care professional can possess in order to be successful. I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)or any other certification test for critical thinking skills are essential for demonstrating a candidate has the knowledge to pass. This book teaches step by step how to develop critical thinking which will enable a person to pass any test based on this specific way of reasoning out information in order to make an educated judgment based on in-depth thinking. I am totally impressed the book and its author, Rosalinda Alfaro-LeFevre, made an outstanding job on researching and supporting her views and recommendations for developing critical thinking skills.

And the author's surprising view of pagan gods and the coming of Christianity is as fascinating as the prominence he gives to women and his understanding of how the world of chivalry should work. Because of its enormous length - it runs to over a million words - Nigel Bryant has provided a version which gives a complete account of every episode, linking extensive passages of translation, to make a manageable and highly readable version (including the previously unpublished Books Five and Six), of this remarkable and largely unexplored work. A Marvelous, Little-Known Masterpiece of World Literature--and Catnip for fans of Arthurian Legends

You can put away your Tolkien and other faux-medieval sagas--this is the real thing. Perceforest is a massive and incredible work, written in the early 1330s, that purports to be a history of pre-Arthurian Brtitain. It's also one of most overlooked books of world literature. And boy is it wild! This is an Arthurian legend avant Arthur, with lengthy guest appearances by Alexander the Great (who hands over England to King Perceforest) and Julius Caesar, who jousts with knights on horseback! Did I mention it also has the first written version of the Sleeping Beauty story, a Fairy Queen, a homicidal one year old born with a crossbow in his hand, a four-legged hairy fish with the head of an ox, a fallen angel who enjoys pranking his human friends, and more enchantments than you can shake a stick at? This monster of a book delivers a heady, vast mix of chivalry, folklore, adventure, and romance.

If you're familiar with the French Arthurian romances, you can see how they've inspired the author of Perceforest--there are many echoes of the Prose Tristan and the Grail sagas (including appearances by the Questing Beast), but they never feel derivative. And whereas the Grail romances could be emotionally austere and psychotically anti-sex, the author of Perceforest is a good-humored, sometimes bawdy fellow with an encyclopedic mind and an endless talent for remixing his sources in startling ways. He takes you through the history of several generations of kings, knights, and damsels (the great-great-great-great grandparents of King Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin, and so on) as the kingdom of Perceforest weathers its share of cataclysms and trials, and ultimately bridges his book with the History of the Holy Grail from the Lancelot Vulgate. The author perhaps runs out of steam toward the end, but the book is never tiresome--I wouldn't have minded if it was twice as long, and Perceforest is surprisingly well-structured and calibrated for a book of such incredible length.

The original version of Perceforest was written in Old French and spread across six volumes, the smallest being longer than Moby Dick! This English translation by Nigel Bryant weighs in at 780 pages but is a brisk read. Arthurian fans everywhere owe Bryant thanks for pulling off a remarkable feat--rather than translate a series of extracts connected with bare-bone summary, he recounts every worthwhile incident and interesting line of dialogue while summarizing the less essential connective passages and recaps. No characters or events have been left out, and you never feel as if you've missed a thing. The book flows smoothly, though at times it can be hard keeping track of the hundreds of knights and their progeny.

This is the first version of Perceforest in English, and it's the most important translation of an Arthurian romance since the editions of the Lancelot-Grail released in the late 1990s. It's also the last original Arthurian saga created in medieval times (Malory's work by contrast is a compilation). Though this edition is costly, you can't afford to miss it if you love magical adventures of chivalrous knights on marvelous quests. A very long, complex set of 'lays' of pre-Aurthurian legends beginning when Alexander the Great entered Britain. It is not a quick read. It has over 1 million words. But it is fascinating. I'll read a bit every day. Well worth the time to read if you are fascinated by legends of King Arthur.

I liked this story

A nobleman, Lord Robert St. Simon, approaches Holmes with a very strange tale indeed. It seems that immediately after his wedding, his bride disappeared without a trace! After hearing the details of the case, which has Lestrade baffled, Holmes calmly announces that he has solved the case already. It seems that there never was a Mrs. St. Simon! Just what can Holmes mean?

This story was first published in Strand Magazine in April of 1892. Overall, I found this to be an interesting story, and a nice addition to the Holmes canon. The mystery is interesting, and Holmes’ solving of it is quite logical. So, I must say that I liked this story and highly recommend it.

About the Author
George Graham, PhD, joined the faculty in the Department of Kinesiology at Penn State in August 2002. He serves as the coordinator of the K-12 Health and Physical Education program and as the Director of the Pedagogy of Physical Activity Laboratory. He moved to Penn State after 17 years on the faculty at Virginia Tech. He began his career teaching and coaching in the public schools of California and Oregon and also served on the faculties of the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina. Dr. Graham has published extensively on the topics of physical education teacher effectiveness and physical education and activity for children with twelve books and monographs to his credit and over 50 articles. He is a much sought after speaker and consultant, delivering presentations at more then 100 conferences (over 35 were keynote addresses) throughout the world as well as serving as a consultant to seventy-five school districts, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the Professional Golf Association of America. Dr. Graham has appeared on CBS in the Morning, CNN, and National Public Radio (NPR) to speak on the topic of positive physical education for children. He has also been cited in USA Today, The Harvard Review and The Washington Post. A recipient of numerous awards, he most recently was inducted as a Fellow in the North American Society for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He was awarded the Margie Hanson Honor Award presented by the Council on Physical Education for Children, and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Curriculum and Instruction Academy Honor Award. Dr. Graham served as the Executive Director of the United States Physical Education Association. Along with his graduate students he wrote the first developmentally appropriate document for the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). He is the immediate past-President of NASPE. He also serves on the PepsiCo Blue Ribbon Advisory Board for Health and Wellness and as the Director of Research and Curriculum Development for Top Dog Fitness. His most recent work is focused on educational uses of computer technology for teachers and students. He is the senior advisor for PE Central, the ultimate website for physical education teachers that averages over 70,000 unique visitors per month. Dr. Graham also is the senior advisor to Healthy Hearts, an e-Learning module delivered via the Internet for upper elementary and middle school students, designed to teach them about cardiovascular disease, physical activity, nutrition and tobacco avoidance. Healthy Hearts is currently being used extensively in West Virginia and New York.

Shirley Ann Holt/Hale is an elementary physical education teacher at Linden Elementary School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a position she has held for more than 30 years. She is the immediate past-president of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the first elementary physical education teacher ever elected to the highest office of the Alliance. She is a Past-President of NASPE, a member of the NASPE Hall of Fame, and a charter member of the North American Society for Health and Physical Education Professionals. She has previously been recognized as the National Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. She served on the Task Force for the development of the National Standards for Physical Education (NASPE), and served as chairperson for the development of the National Teaching Standards for Physical Education (NBPTS). Dr. Holt/Hale has authored eight books, has written numerous articles, and has made over 150 invited presentations throughout the U.S. In addition to her daily teaching of elementary physical education, she serves as a consultant in curriculum development, assessment, and teaching by themes. Holt/Hale has an undergraduate degree from Berea College and a Ph.D. from Peabody/Vanderbilt University.

Melissa Parker is a professor in the School of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Northern Colorado. Her areas of interest are elementary physical education and teacher education. Prior to entering higher education, Parker was an elementary physical education teacher in middle school physical education in a special program for underserved youth. Regardless of the level of teaching involved, she has the consistent desire to see students become self-directed, responsible learners. Parker received her PhD and MA from The Ohio State University. Her undergraduate degree was from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, from which she recently received the School of Health and Human Performance Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Parker has been active in a variety of capacities at the state, regional, and national levels of AAHPERD. She has received Honor Awards at the state and national levels for her service and dedication to students.

The beauty and of course the utility of the book -- as the title indicates -- is that the clauses -- boilerplate clauses to be precise -- are listed for ease of use in alphabetical order from `acknowledgements' to `warranties'.

This feature alone is a boon to the busy lawyer, or indeed anyone tasked with drafting a commercial contract. (One of the better known clauses in this alphabetical list is `completion' pertaining to the sale of real property.)

But what exactly are `boilerplate clauses?' Although the term generally defies precise definition, the co-authors Mark Anderson and Victor Warner state that it's used broadly to mean contract terms that are found in commercial agreements, almost irrespective of the subject matter of the agreement. Usually found toward the end of an agreement, they quite often are not necessarily concerned with its subject matter, or its main purpose. Nonetheless, as the authors imply, you ignore or dismiss such clauses at your peril.

Failure to consider (or understand) all the provisions of a commercial agreement (even the "boring "ones)' [i.e. boilerplate clauses] say the authors, can have serious consequences - hence the value of this book, which also examines a selection of other contract clauses frequently encountered in many types of commercial agreement.

This new third edition has been written as a practical guide (rather than specifically a legal textbook or casebook) for practitioners frequently faced with the challenges posed by boilerplate and other commercial clauses in their everyday commercial work. Following on from the two previous editions, this new one provides additional explanations and commentary on the legal principles which underline a boilerplate clause.

Other new material includes sections on data protection, freedom of information and good faith and much more besides. The book also provides extensive tables of cases, statutes, and statutory instruments, plus an appendix which features a sample boilerplate agreement and detailed index.

Primarily this is a useful practitioner guide to an often confusing, yet crucially important area of law, although the authors are careful to state that it is not a general guide to negotiating or drafting contracts. For that they recommend their book `Drafting and Negotiating Commercial Contracts' also published, like this particular volume, in 2012.
