About the Author
Jackie Holt has worked as a costume maker and a wardrobe supervisor in numerous theatres around Britain. She has worked in a freelance capacity on anything from small scale touring shows to supervising large scale musicals, such as 125th Street at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End and the sell-out 20th Anniversary concert of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd at the Royal Festival Hall. Jackie and Ruth's previous book, Knit Your Own Scotland, was a bestseller. Ruth Bailey was born and brought up in Thurso, Caithness. After gaining a postgraduate degree in painting from Edinburgh College of Art she went on to self train as a milliner. She currently works freelance as an artist, costume designer and prop maker for theatre and business.

Wonderful patterns!

I do wish there had been a Police Box (telephone booth, tardus, etc) in here, but these patterns are tops! Especially love the Beatles ones! Have requests for about 6 items out of the book, already. hehe

Knit your own Cornish pasty!

I knew I'd end up buying this - and its sister volume 'Knit your own Scotland' - after seeing them advertised last year. I slightly prefer the Scotland one: I agree with other reviewer that patterns for all 4 Beatles is a bit much. And Ant and Dec...well, if you like that sort of thing...and do they represent Britain?
However, this is more than made up for by the superb Henry VIII and Shakespeare, and a convincing Mrs Thatcher. The Beckhams and a rumpled Boris Johnson (Mayor of London)are instantly identifiable. And where else would you find a pattern for pot of Marmite ? Inspiring!

Directions are not good!

I am a very experienced knitter, including complicated amigurumi. Nevertheless, the one project I knitted from this book (a Beatle) did not turn out to look anything like it was supposed to! Proportions were wrong. I ended up having to reknit several pieces and make several other alterations. Also, some of the directions are pretty vague. These figures are also larger than I expected and took waaaay too much time! No more for me!
