An academic thesis

This feels very like an academic thesis. Wonder what it all means? There is no central theme here at all. Can't pin this one down as useful in any material way. Fibonacci Return on Investment? How is that a Screenwriting Manual? For that matter how is a bunch of lists got anything to do with the Fibonacci Principle? I've seen far too many authors illustrate their assertions by associating them with Blockbuster films or novels - for example, Kal Bashir does it... and a dozen others. Weighty but implausible.

It feels a lot like the academic research notebook results of hours and hours trawling the internet and sitting in a well-stocked library with index cards all over the desk next to piles and piles of esoteric cobwebbed paperbacks as primary sources.

I wonder what the argument of the thesis is? It might have some gravitas - can't really tell from this though. It is certainly not a Screenwriting Manual.

I don't think the author had an audience in mind - it's more an, 'admire me, I'm an academic - I know everything' tome.

The Nautilus shell concept caught my eye - but it was't paid off. Claimed, yes - but not argued, proved or disproved. It seemed to be a diagram with random labels stuck on it by a thousand Chimpanzees.

It just left me bewildered.

If the author completely eliminated the Fibonacci idea and stuck with the financials and ROI he might just have a point - and a thesis, not a Screenwriting manual, but a thesis. At the moment it is an Honours level mish-mash purporting to be a PhD. Can't be anything else. Can't be.

Good section on screenplay design

J T Velikovsky’s screenwriting manual, Storyality, offers a fascinating time-line/page-count approach to designing a screenplay or story based on the Golden Ratio. I would love to have seen more analysis and explanation of this, particularly as the golden spiral is so frequently drawn in the book, and decorates its cover. Sadly, the golden ratio plays only a very small part in the book’s analyses, and its use in screenplay covers very few pages, despite its importance to mathematics and aesthetics.

The author frequently mentions “scientific and empirical” approaches in this book, but his explanation and use of the scientific method is scientifically flawed. His hypotheses and conclusions are deliberately never tested on random samples, with a claim that this would invalidate his empirical approach.

Assuming first-time percentage return-on-investment really is the measure of a movie-writer’s future success (another untested theory), the lists and analyses of top and bottom twenty movies in this book are certainly interesting, if occasionally quirky. For example, I’d disagree with the author’s conclusion that bad guys win in many of his listed movies, since they only win to the extent that doors are left open for sequels. That said, the lists are good, and the idea of analyzing movies is certainly interesting. I just wish the approach had been more genuinely scientific.

Storyality reads, in many parts, like a doctoral thesis in the making. It would certainly be intriguing to see if any of the author’s conclusions really do bear up to scientific testing. For myself though, I just want to know how the golden ratio plays out.

Beginning as part of a Doctoral thesis, Storyality is now a condensed but accessible book that can be read as is or used like a gateway, key or shoe horn into numerous online blogs where a wealth of further story-related information, facts, figures and observations can be found.

Storyality attempts to strip away the starry-eyed, dreamy aspects often associated with the film industry (and creativity in general) to reveal the patterns and common denominators contained within those films that have historically returned high ROI.

Why do certain themes and genres have more success than others?
Why do the majority of produced films fail to make a successful ROI?
What are the most successful ROI films?
What do the successful ROI films have in common?
What are the most unsuccessful ROI films?
How do memes, word of mouth (and now, mouse) and film-centric analytics fit into the picture?

Storyality is not for the TV Guide crowd. But neither is it exclusively for film industry buffs, professionals, academics or students of the subject.

Amongst a variety of facts and figures are some interesting trivia and remarks (a few likely to be considered controversial) regarding films you may have seen or at least heard of.

The danger in reducing a script or film to a formula or process is that we are left with a soul-less x-branded product devoid of individuality or passion, one that follows the beats and joins the dots. But when any new product is released (and a film is but a product, albeit a dynamic one) numbers are first crunched, data regarding what has worked before is called upon, risk analyses are conducted, forecasts are made and markets are tested.

What the author is showing is that he can wear both Writer and Producer hats. The writer uses imagination, creativity and passion to invent the script; the Producer (and perhaps backers, Bankers and Executives) need to know the script has a good chance of working outside the writer's head, preferably appealing to as many people within given target audiences as possible.

Many have endeavored to pin down formulas for success and creativity; to uncover the magic pudding ingredient that can be replicated again and again. None such exist, of course. Success generally comes from study, hard work, good luck and being smart.

However, understanding and implementing the concepts contained within Storyality, may just increase the chances of successful Return on Investment as it applies to film.

Only time will tell.

Shane Dunne uses his visions to create magnificent art, and the most beautiful piece he's ever done is of his mate, Akane Russo. Akane is one of Robin Goodfellow's Blades, and assigned to guard and protect Shane from the treachery and plotting of the Malmayne clan. She isn't anyone's mate, no matter how gorgeous Shane is. Until danger surfaces and threatens to take Shane away forever-then Akane will do whatever it takes to save him and claim him.

As the Prophecy comes closer to being fulfilled, the danger around the Dunne and Blackthorn clans increases. When Shane is poisoned by someone he looked on as a friend, the only way to save him is something Akane is afraid may take him from her forever. She never wanted a mate, but now that they are together, no one is going to hurt him again. But which of the Malmayne clan is leading this latest round of treachery and betrayal? Can Akane dig deep enough to uncover the guilty party? Can she do what must be done to save the man she has come to love, in spite of her resolve?

I have been looking forward to Shane and Akane's story for a while, and it did not disappoint. I love the depth Ms. Bell adds to each of her characters, and the many layers of this very magical and mystical realm, with the Black, White and Grey Courts. This is a thrill ride of a story, with passion and danger throughout, but there is a wonderfully wicked sense of humor here at work as well. The characters have such vivid personalities, I expected to look up and see them materialize in front of me.

Akane Russo is loyal, brave and determined to do her job: protect Shane Dunne even if does suffer from a delusion that she is his mate. Her seer half has flashes of insight, while her dragon half is determined to resist. As one of The Hob's infamous Blades, she has no room in her life for romance, especially with someone as irritating and insufferable as Shane Dunne. I loved watching as her attitude went from bored irritation, to curiosity, admiration and finally love. I loved her determination to save Shane, once she accepted that he was her mate, and the fear that she could destroy him with the cure he needed.

Shane Dunne is a talented artist, creating masterpieces from the visions that rule his future. He is determined to claim Akane for his mate, but he also loves to tease and annoy her, just to see her passion erupt. He is keeping secrets, and knows what is coming, but he also knows he can't change what has to happen. I loved the playful and silly banter Shane used with Akane, and his "aw shucks ma'am" farm boy persona he adopted just to get a rise from his mate.

There are several threats to the Dunne/Blackthorn clan, and Shane is at the center of more than one. The Malmayne clan, or at least the heads of the clan, have pledged allegiance to the Black Court, and have misinterpreted the Prophecy concerning "a child of Dunne". These threads were brought together neatly, and the immediate danger has been averted.

The secondary characters play a large role in this story, with every family member being integral to stopping the evil from taking hold and creating chaos. But the main thread, the romance between two of the rarest of supernatural beings, true hybrids, is the centerpiece of this book. This is most definitely Shane and Akane's book, and everything else takes a back seat to the passion and beauty of the union of these two fantastic characters.

I recommend this for those who like intrigue mixed with magic and passion, but I recommend you read the first two books in the series to get the richness of this world and all its inhabitants.

"The child of Dunne will one day perform an act that will change our world"

I would say that it is pretty obvious that the child in question is Shane Dunne and after reading this one I have to say I have new question: What does the Black Queen want with not just Shane but all the Dunne's? That was what I was left with at the end of this book but I am jumping ahead and I apologize but I just finished it so the end is very fresh in my mind.

Reading how Shane was trying to "woo" his mate was as very creative as his art work. Akane really just couldn't walk away from the puzzle that was her "Jethro" or her puzzle box. I never knew dragons were addicted to puzzles.

I have to say I was really surprised by one twist in the story that I didn't see coming and it wasn't the fact the that the Hob had a child as he probably has several but as I don't want to give that much of the book away, I will say I never expected one of the Hob's children to be a bad guy. And then of course Cecilia and Henri, I sure hope they aren't first cousin 'cause that has way to much icky eww to go a long way.

As I was reading I came across an inconsistency which is an anomaly in this book that I don't think I have seen in any of Dana Marie Bells books. Dana's attention to detail is phenomenal when it comes to the worlds she creates so I was actually surprised. So now to tease one of my favorite authors by asking (and yes I have to ask because I can't resist); when did Leo become the big brother? I thought Shane was the older brother and Leo the older brother? ;) Seriously though it does not take away from the story line in anyway, the characters are still compelling, sex scenes are smokin hot (no pun intended) between the Dragon, Akane and the Sidhe Lord/Leprechaun, Shane and the story line will leave eyes glued to the book much to your significant others consternation.

Must-have polymer book, flowers are beautiful & easy to make

This is a must-have book for anyone wanting to learn to make beautiful miniature flowers. It is great book for all levels, even those who have never worked with polymer clay.
At first glance I though it would be hard and very time consuming. I was wrong. I was amazed at how easy it really was. In less than two hours, I had a very impressive looking rose bud.
The author first covers materials and how to work with polymer clay. Included templates help you judge size & shape. Each part of every flower is then explained step by step. Numerous color photos help to guide you.
Flowers covered include roses, dogwood, daisies, cherry blossoms, pansies, daffodils, and irises. There are a few projects in the back showing you how to frame the flowers and make jewelry or ornaments out of them.

excellent resource for life-like flowers!

I have many books on polymer clay and this is one of my favorites! The techiques show here can be applied to any sculpture but what impressed me was how lifelike these projects look! And with such detailed explanations and illustrations it is an easy jump to use these techiques to create flowers of your own choice. I have made figures from polymer clay for 7 years now and most books are repetitive to me, I found this one re-energized my creative juices and gave me something new to make, I now make minature flowers to adorn some of my figures and have been pleased with the new dimension it adds.

Marred by Errors; Lacks Maps and References

I read this book on my Kindle as the one free book I borrow for each month from the Kindle lending library
As a retired Army colonel who served 30 years with 13 years overseas including a tour in Vietnam followed by teaching high school history for 13 years, I feel qualified in criticizing this slim general survey of military commanders throughout history.
The book is marred by numerous errors which reflect poor editing or lack of knowledge on the part of the author. For example, Pyrrhus lived 319 - 272 B.C., but dates of 75 and 81 B.C. are used to date battles in which he fought.
In the section devoted to Hannibal (one of my all-time favorite generals), the author describes "Spanish hill tribesmen armed with deadly yet distinctive short shorts." Perhaps, the author is referring to the clothing worn by overweight people to Walmart. Such a sight would have seared the eyes of Hannibal's opponents.
In the section on Charlemagne, the author failed to mention that Charles the Great was also the grandson of Charles Martel.
Concluding the section on Genghis Khan, the author states, "His grandson Kublai Khan would later realize his dream in the conquest of the Song Chinese, as well as invasions of Japan..." While technically true, the invasions were not successful.
The term "janissaries" was not clearly defined in the discussion of Suleiman the Magnificent. I knew that they were generally shock troopers recruited from young men who had been forcibly converted from Christianity to Islam.
One of the most egregious errors was describing the 1755 battle at Monongahela as a British victory. It was a debacle for the British. And, the French and Indian War did end in 1758. It ended in 1763.
The author missed an opportunity to add to Admiral Nelson's stature by failing to include how the expression "turning a blind eye" came into being at the Battle of Copenhagen.
I could go on but will end with the author's comment that Jackson quit the Army in 1851 "to attend Virginia Military Institute." Jackson graduated from West Point. He left the Army to teach at VMI.
On a positive note, the author did give a succinct and accurate description of Patton. I only wish he had done so well for others.
The book lacked maps and references.
I could not recommend this survey of military commanders to anyone.

Not quite sure why the author selected this particular group of leaders as "the greatest." No rationale or criteria are given. Most of the selections are standard, a few are dubious: Darius III (whose greatest accomplishment was losing to Alexander) and Bernard Montgomery (Market Garden) are perhaps the most unusual selections. The inclusion of Patton, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson reflect an American bias. Stonewall Jackson was successful in small engagements against fourth-rate Union generals during his short career, but his accomplishments are dwarfed by those of Frederick the Great, who was not included. David Farragut's daring and brilliant seizure of New Orleans had far greater impact on the outcome of the war than Jackson's Valley Campaign. And why select Patton over Eisenhower, who bore the overall responsibility for the success of the Normandy invasion? The greatest value of this short book is probably in introducing Western readers to Yi Sun-Sin, Oda Nobunaga and Khalid ibn Walid.

It's a great source of information and I had a fantastic read. The author discussed each commander in a concise and straightforward manner, which was okay. I'm familiar with some of these military commanders but there are some I've only read about here so it was great knowing about them. I would want to watch a movie about these other commanders.

Bhaviveka and His Buddhist Opponents gives a clear and accessible translation of Chapters 4 and 5 of this text: the chapters on the Sravakas, or eighteen schools, and the Yogacaras, Bhaviveka’s most important Mahayana opponents. The translation is introduced by an essay that situates Bhaviveka in the intellectual context of sixth-century India, and it is accompanied by copious notes, commenting on Bhaviveka’s sources and explaining his controversial method. The book also contains a critical edition of the Sanskrit text of Bhaviveka’s verses and the Tibetan translation of the verses and commentary.

The best bet

There are many things we must thank Richard Ellmann for. First of all, his poetry anthologies. Second, his biographies on Wilde, Yeats and Joyce. And finally, this short, delightful, easy-reading book. Four conferences about the best Irish writers ever: Wilde, Yeats, Joyce and Beckett. And the four are masterpieces. They do not talk about the "common places" you are suppossed to here while being in a conference, they try to express a fact, a situation, a place that defines the person they are talking about: Wilde in Oxford, Yeats in his "old age", Joyce and his anxiety looking for facts to write about, Beckett and Naught. I think that everyone interested on these authors should read the book.

Well worth buying and reading

Ellmann's book is a short one of 122 pages, counting index, and is taken from his four lectures on Wilde, Yeats, Joyce, and Beckett that he gave at the Library of Congress. The book is light, easy, and enjoyable reading and can be finished in four short sessions or in one afternoon or evening. Each of the four chapters assumes that the reader has some general familiarity with the man's life and work, but doesn't require expert knowledge.

As a consequence of the lectures being delivered with a gap of one year from one to the next, each chapter is independent of the others, until the last on Beckett, where Ellmann makes an effort to relate each author to the rest. The four men are very different in their styles and personal history, and most of their lives were spent in places other than Dublin, but relating them in one book makes some sense, albeit somewhat forced, because of their strong connections to Ireland and because some of them had met each other and been influenced by each other.

Ellmann's insight into the four men and ability to relate them and their work come from years of close study, including knowing some of the participants. Particularly telling are such references as, "Mrs. Yeats told me ...," and the like. He includes delightful references and jokes that limn character, such as Beckett's ironic take on Descartes, "I suffer, therefore I may be."

Bologan writes very instructively and the material is presented in a very tidy manner, making it admirably accessible. He keeps things very clear and doesn't bog the reader down in complex variations. The explanations are good and the conclusions at the end of each chapter are particularly welcome. Bologans explanation of what White is trying to accomplish will be just as valuable to the layman as the concrete lines he offers. An excellent and up-to-date work. Bologan, with his clear explanation of the aims of both players, has written something that will continue to be useful even after some of his analytical suggestions are inevitably refuted. A strong GM's guide to Catalan opening theory

Victor Bologan is clearly one of the hardest-working GMs in the world of chess. He did not attain the 2700+ club until the age of 34, and continues to defy all the stereotypes about youth and chess strength by growing even stronger; in his 40s, he is currently rated 2734. A key to his strength is his hard work on openings, as evidenced by the long list of well-received opening resources he has authored (7 DVDs and 4 books). Bologan has a lot experience with the Catalan (1. d4 Nf3 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 d5 4. g3); the (incomplete) online games database at chesstempo.com shows him with a record of +4 -2 = 10 playing both white and black. As you would expect, then, his recommendations and analysis in this book make another fine contribution to opening theory that will help strong players play either side of the Catalan with confidence.

The Catalan is a highly concrete opening: in some tabiyas white sheds a pawn for strong piece coordination and queenside attacking chances; in others he might opt for a better pawn structure, more space, or faster development. Accordingly, Bologan doesn't attempt to provide an overview of white's (or black's) goals, but instead jumps right into the analysis of variations from the beginning and never lets up. It's not just a database dump, though, as he gives generous text to describing the goals of various moves, and why certain move orders are preferred. Bologan structures the book in 18 chapters based on the black player's reply, with a chapter each on the Queen's Indian setup (4...b6), the Tarrasch (4...c5), the Triangle (4...c6), 2 chapters on the bishop check 4...Bb4+, 7 chapters on the pawn grab 4...dxc4, and 6 chapters on the modest bishop development 4...Be7.

You should be aware that this book is a pure discussion of opening theory: Bologan does not present any annotated games or discuss typical middlegame or endgame themes. As a result, I cannot recommend this book for players below expert level (Elo 2000) who want more than just the pure analysis of opening variations. Bologan does not discuss any key GM games where the black player has equalized easily (such as Nakamura - Carlsen, Tal Memorial 2012 or Ivanchuk - Gelfand, Tata Steel 2012); instead he simply recommends a different white move from a recent game between lesser known titled players that will sidestep black's strategem. Also, while Bologan's analysis is thorough and--so far as this club player can tell--accurate, he does not suggest any theoretical novelties.

A word or two about the book's cover: Bologan describes the Catalan as a way to get a mild, positionally subtle opening edge without giving black too many dynamic chances. In other words, a chess player might describe the Catalan as "deep" or "subtle" rather than "powerful." Of course, deep and subtle doesn't sell as many copies! Also, Bologan's introduction belies the subtitle ("a complete repertoire for white"), in that he explains that you will have to learn from other resources how to play against Black openings like the Bogo-Indian, the Queen's Indian, the King's Indian, the Benoni, the Benko Gambit, etc.

Bottom line: given the high quality of Bologan's analysis, you should buy this book if you're a strong player who wants an excellent guide to Catalan opening theory.

Very Good, but Missing Some Depth

Victor Bologan is a very strong player and his experience and knowledge really show in the writing of this book. His recommendations are always top notch, and align very closely with the lines played by the elite. Being that said, this work is not as good as he could have done, because he does not provide as much explanation, and he does not provide much original analysis. To be more specific, there are some critical lines (like the main line starting with 4...Bb4+) where he reaches one of Black's toughest continuations, and then provides zero original analysis. This is the reason I only give him 4 stars, rather than 5.

To summarize, I think an opening book should

1.- Talk about a good opening
2.- provide the best lines and give objective evaluations
3.- Provide original analysis when needed.

I think this book does very well on points 1 & 2, but not so well on point 3, which is the reason I only give him 4 stars.
