I wish this book were still in print.

I just inherited my mother's 1952 edition and was sad to see this book is no longer in print. It is unlike a dictionary and unlike a thesaurus. Instead it is an exhaustive list of words with suggested modifiers; adverbs, adjectives and verbs. I hardly ever use it for writing but it is an essential tool for building one's vocabulary. Maybe one day it will be brought back and updated for the 21st century.
This amazing book is fun to just browse. If you find a copy I highly recommend purchasing it. The prices for the used copies,($31. +), seem a bit high.

I am looking for another copy of this book. It is out of print. It would be a 3rd one, I gave one to a friend and the 1st one is torn and beat up. They should have named this the Adjective and Adverb Finder. It helps describe any noun or verb in a sentence. I think it did not become popular because of the confusing title. It's the most valuable book reference book I own. If you can find a copy, you better grab it.

Designing with the Whole Brain

This book takes a very academic approach to teaching graphic design in the effort to give designers an objective criteria to apply in the evaluation of the strengths and weakness of a composition. It opens by linking the principles of design to semiotics, which interprets language to be any system of communication such as words, signs, symbols, images, and music through which meaning is constructed by the logical relationships of its component parts. Point, line, plane, and volume are the syntax of visual language and shape, size, color, and texture form the structure. From that foundation the rest of the book discusses the logic that has gone into the placement, grouping, alignment, visual flow, divisions of space, as well as color schemes, through progressive demonstrations of very basic layouts to compelling, visual compositions in an in-depth study and analysis of design that I haven't come across before in other design books. I was particularly excited about the creative utilization of the implied forces of space and the fibonacci series in the creation of non-rectangular grids, which helped the book in evading its somewhat dry academic tone in my opinion and allowed me to see the value in an intellectual foundation in the application of the creative process in design, as a field of communication.

Design Student Handbook

Design Elements Form and Space by Dennis M. Puhalla (Ph.D) is an amazingly helpful textbook and I would recommend it to any new design student, or anyone interested in design and the elements that make it up. I was assigned this book as a freshman going to school for graphic design and I thought buying a book for this major was very unnecessary. Little did I know that this book would not only teach me a ton about the elements of design (color theory, ordering strategy, spatial structure, order and forces) but it also has an abundance of pictorial examples of what they are talking about and explaining. I know this is important to me, and other designers because most designers are very visual learners. The images are a huge part, and show more than enough examples to help me comprehend the elements that would be otherwise hard to understand without pictorial examples. This book has taught me a lot, and has come in handy more than once. The readings I was assigned were easy to comprehend, and I have even gone back to this book for projects more than once. I am very happy with the purchase I made when buying this book. The size is not too big, and (obviously) the cover was designed beautifully so I don’t mind grabbing it and taking it places with me. It’s also a joy to look at when searching for inspiration or rules for designing multiple projects. It’s not too text-heavy and not too difficult to understand. My professors used this book for inspiration for some of our projects my first semester. I attended the University Of Cincinnati Blue Ash and having this book to remind me of the design elements and rules while even almost completely following the project guidelines was beyond helpful. I appreciated my teachers for doing this because being a brand-new college student in a very demanding major can be extremely stressful, and having a book full of guidelines to push you in the right direction is sometimes all you need to keep you from a project-induced panic attack. I have not had many other purely design books, but compared to the books I have purchased for typography and drawing I would consider this the most helpful, and easy to read. So all together, this book is a very easy read, beautifully designed, and can be a huge factor in creating something aesthetically pleasing hopefully resulting in a 4.0.

The realest graphic design manual.

I've owned this book for years. It's a fundamental book in my repertoire. The book is advanced in a lot of ways. It assumes you are looking to produce professional design in the near future and thus, is not for beginners. The principles are easy to employ right away and are easy to practice in your own designs. I highly recommend to anyone in the graphic design industry.

Too Much, Scattered, Poorly Designed, thus Not Enough

This review is strictly for Q: Skills for Success Listening and Speaking 1. This is not for the Reading and Writing series, nor for any other levels.

Too Much:
In the first unit alone, there are two vocabulary sections, one vocabulary skill section, two listening sections, one listening skill section, two grammar sections, a pronunciation section, and a speaking skill section. It is completely unreasonable to teach prefixes that mean 'not', yes/no questions, simple present tense statements, information questions, intonation in yes/no and information questions, asking follow-up questions, and listening for examples all in the first unit!

Scattered:
Grammar lessons are overly explained to the point of confusion with the example exercises immediately jumping into 'exceptions' or concepts that need further explaining, rendering the plethora of grammar explanations seemingly useless. The redundancy of repeating information (such as subjects) only confuses students looking for clarity.

Poorly Designed:
There are so many good ideas in this book that are so poorly done, it's frustrating. To begin with, the first Unit is 20 pages long. There are too many lessons attempted in one unit and none well-structured. Core lessons, such as Vocabulary and Grammar, are presented with disorganized depth while more specialized lessons, such as prefixes and information questions, are so briefly covered that they simply disrupt the coherence of the unit.

Not Enough:
Despite the overabundance of material, much is left to be desired for this book to be useful in ESL classes (and definitely not useful for self-study). Lessons should be simplified to one or two key learning objectives while explanations and definitions should be broadened and better organized to allow students to gain confidence that they are using the lessons correctly.

Good Points:
The listening scripts (which are sold separately) are slow and clear for beginner students. Natural speech elements, such as 'ummm' and laughter, are included and though over-acted and unnatural, allow students to experience them.

Conclusion:
Do not use this book in your English Conversation classes.

Most successful l/s book we've used to date

I used this with Level 2 college students in an IEP. It includes a good mix of topics that were relevant to my students' areas of study, e.g., travel and tourism, culture, and sociology, as well as some more 'pop' topics like music that appealed to the general age group. The language skills and vocabulary are appropriate for academic prep, but the book is more a hybrid of an academic text and a general English conversation book.

The listening tasks are mainly longer conversations and lectures presented along with listening strategies and study skills that are useful for ESL students preparing to enter a university setting.The book does a good job of integrating language skills with plenty of follow-up speaking and writing exercises. Some of the speaking exercises were challenging and students needed some extra support, but they all said the exercises were useful.

The downside of the book is the long units and that fact that it's hard to leave anything out because the exercises all build on each other leading up to the final speaking presentation. Meeting 3 times a week, it took 2-3 weeks to cover all the material. Once I knew that, I went through with students and had them vote on the top five units they were most interested in and we were able to cover those and some bits and pieces like grammar points I selected from other units by the end of the semester. I'm using it again with a new group next semester and will do the same as this worked well. All in all, I'd rather have a book that takes the time to cover a topic in-depth, even if we don't finish every unit, than one that rushes students through in 4 pages so that the finish the book but haven't really mastered anything.
