WOW!

So you're familiar with my background, I received a B.S. in Astrophysics and now I am a first year graduate student in an Applied Math program. I used this book as a supplementary resource when studying Partial Differential Equations - we got to Separation of Variables and then to Fourier Series. Every Physics student who graduates today has at least seen a Fourier Series (I hope). I didn't feel confident in my abilities so I bought this book to review.

Let me tell you, if this is your first time hearing about Fourier Series then this book is simply the BEST book to learn Fourier Series and much of the beautiful underlying theory behind Fourier Analysis! It's so well written and clear that I had absolutely no trouble following the text. I cannot express how clear and beautifully it is written, it is extremely rare for a math book at this level to be so vivid and eloquent! The proofs are easy to follow and the problems ease you into the subject presented in each section; which, in turn, are "bite-sized" and manageable. I studied the material by myself and walked away knowing Fourier Series.

There are plenty of good examples, the problems are great! If you're self-studying (or not) do as many of the problems as you can; if you read the previous two or three sections you should have absolutely no trouble going through the problems. Applications galore!

NOTE: This book isn't written at the graduate level, don't shy away from it because I mentioned being a grad student, I just wanted a review of Fourier Series. If I had to rate the level of the book I would say it's at a beginning upper-division level of a typical american university. If you've had a decent multi-variable calculus class, and are comfortable with partial derivatives, this book should be very comprehensible. It's clearer still to physics majors (or the like) who are more familiar with what and where specific equations apply to.

This book is beautiful, and I think it should be required reading of every physics and applied math student everywhere (maybe I'm just a little biased).

The ONLY caveat is that the Fourier Complex Series is left to problems, we don't get to use them to learn theory and get more comfortable with. This is okay since the cosine and sine series are equivalent to the complex series, it's just that the complex series is more elegant when doing problems or proving things.

If you are an advanced undergraduate student or a begining graduate student and want to learn not only the concepts behind Fourier Series but see how it can be applied to boundary value problems of mathematical physics, then this is "the" book you should read. It is well written - easy to understand and illustrated with lots of examples.

The terror began right when Maggie slept in the canopy bed..

I thought this book would be much better by the cover and the back summary. I wanted to read it badly, so i did. it only took me a day to finish it! It was good, yet very shocking. It isn't very scary, but pretty suspensful.
The book is about a girl named Maggie who moves into a creppy house on Fear street. When she goes into the room she chose, she finds an old fashioned pink canopy bed. She falls in love with it right away. but the minute she lies down in the bed, she starts seeing a girl getting murdered. But it got worse. the horrible dreams got more grusome, and when they started happening, Maggie was even more terrofied. Can Maggie stop it?
My advice: IF U LIKE MY SUMMARY FOR IT, THEN U WILL LIKE IT. READ IT:) ITS GREAT!

bad dreams

My book "bad dreams" is about a girl named Maggie Travers who is moving into a new house with her mom and her sister, Andrea, and her dog Gus. ever since her father died they became very poor and had to move to a house on Fear Street Ave. they get to their new house and as maggie gets inside depressed because of the move. she walkes to her room and inside she sees a beautiful canopy bed. she calles her mom and her sister in to see the new bed mom andrea! maggie shouted come in here quick hurry!as they walk in her sisters jaw drops in jealousy. her sister Andrea was always extremly jealous of maggie because she was much better at everything. maggie pleaded her mom to let her keep the bed. her mom says yes and maggie is very happy. that night maggie goes to sleep and while she is sleeping she has terrible dreams of a girl getting tourcherd and stabed by someone. maggie has these dreams every night and stars to wonder if she is having these dreams as a warning that something bad is going to happen.

This book is just really to scare you it doesn't have a message it is just a thrilling story. i think other kids reading this will think it is a great book and will be looking farward to readin the rest of the R.L Stine books.

my oppion on this book is that it is very saspenceful and thrilling. Other kids reading this book will think it is a great book and will want to keep reading. and im planning on reading the rest of his great books.

the author did a very good job writing this book. he made it so that you want to keep reading it is vey thrilling a saspence ful and i hope he writs more in the future.

Interesting

I liked this book, I thought the idea was original-having bad dreams about girl being killed in your bed.

I don't really get scared by RL Stine's books, but I have to admit, it was kinda creepy. I like how he describes how Maggie is trying to fall asleep and it's scary. We all can relate to that. I know sometimes when I'm trying to fall asleep, and I hear noises outside, it freaks me out.

The ending is kinda hard to believe for me, but I still never really saw it coming. Well I like the way he ended it, because I hate when the killer turns out to be a ghost or a vampire or something like that. this way, it was more realistic.

Ben is a graduate student who got caught with some pot and an underage companion; after a prison term, he's trying to rebuild his life while working nights at a welfare hotel in San Francisco's Tenderloin. Amber is equally smart, but is hiding out in a VISTA teaching job because of an act of revenge against her brutal boyfriend. The sparks that fly when they meet start a fire that will change both their lives drastically, and Leebron is so good at chronicling their fears and aspirations that you'll be totally engrossed.

In his first novel, Leebron, author of numerous short stories, successfully tackles the uncertain morality and precarious ties shared by two young people whose lives inadvertently turn for the worst. Benjamin West, an aspiring graduate student, is still reeling from the irony of serving a prison term for getting caught with a little dope and a high-school girl; Amber Keenan, overqualified and underpaid, works at a literacy center in San Francisco's shady Tenderloin district. Amber is lying low after a failed attempt at revenge at Dean, her style-maven boyfriend: she turned on every gas outlet in his apartment in the hope that he would light a cigarette when he came home?but it was Dean's new girlfriend, not Dean, who died. Meanwhile, Benjamin finds work as the night desk clerk at the ratty welfare hotel where Amber lives. The two fall into an awkward relationship, sexual but distant, that slips into complicity when Dean returns to avenge himself and Benjamin defends Amber, accidentally killing Dean in the process. Benjamin and Amber forge an odd, necessary bond as they cover their tracks and grapple, alone and together, with the oddities of fate and ill fortune. Leebron's sure feel for detail and a bitter sense of humor keep his tale one level above sordid?but just barely?as his characters struggle, with ample attitude if not much hope of success, against a pretty rotten destiny.

Benjamin is an ordinary young man beginning a new life in San Francisco. After a stretch in prison, he's the night clerk in a seedy Tenderloin hotel. There he meets Vista volunteer Amber, whom he rescues from a violent attacker. She then tells him that the attacker, killed in the struggle, is Dean, her former lover who was seeking revenge because Amber had attempted to kill him. (She succeeded only in killing his other lover.) Two seemingly ordinary young people have become killers. Out West is a curious book. Leebron is a skilled writer, and his story of lowlifes in over their heads is certainly compelling. Yet because he succeeds in his clear intention to make Benjamin and Amber emotional ciphers, the book is ultimately unsatisfying, as we are left unable to understand these ordinary people in extraordinary trouble. Trite and not well thought through.

Although the book contained a certain element of suspense at the begining, the all-too-familiar flashbacks take away some of the flavor. Most of the flashbacks have nothing to do with the story at all and tend to lead the reader astray. The reader does not care about the two protagonists because there is never really a connection between them. All the scenes were briefly mentioned and its hard to tell where the characters are. None of the major cities mentioned in the book are described in great detail. Normally this would be satisfactory but the characters describe the effect their environment has on them. What environment??? Furthermore, some of the scenes are awkward and could have been omitted. The book was reminicent of 'Double Indemnity' except not well thought through. To sum it up, the story was not well thought through and therefore everything else (i.e. style, dialog, etc.) could not work.

It's a book.

While occasionally interesting, Out West suffers greatly from the fact that it never generates any real feelings or compassion/distaste towards the protagonists, by either the narrator or reader. Their relationship seems TV drama-stilted at best, and since story revolves exclusively around them, Leebron never builds momentum for what could have a been a semi-appealing story.

.... This novel is on the dark side--think film noir--but it is far from stereotypically so. The characters are compelling and complex, and the narrative, while not fast-paced, moves forward steadily, even inevitably, and certainly held my interest. This novel will be appreciated by anyone with a postmodern bent.
