Howard Fast (1914-2003) was a celebrated and controversial American writer who, upon occasion, wrote science-fiction stories. 'The General Zapped an Angel",first published in 1969, is a collection of 8 stories - seven of which had never been previously published. The exception is the story " The Mouse" which was featured in the November 1969 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

In this reader's oppinion a science-fiction short story that keeps your interest and shows a commendable a degree of originality and creativity is a rare commodity indeed. The fact that the stories in this collection meet my subjective criteria is a detail I find quite amazing. I would go so far to say that this relatively slim volume would be an excellent text for anyone foolish enough to aspire to write short fiction.

-The Mouse: Just what would happen if aliens infused a common field mouse with intelligence - and then left him as an abandoned experiment?

-"The Wound": Using atomic weapons to release underground oil deposits may disturb more than sand and gas.

-"The Movie": Some folks find reel life more real that, well, real life.

-"The Mohawk": A Mohawk Indian parks himself in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral for some deep meditation much to the consternation of the local parish priest.

-"The Insects": Our friends the bugs start broadcasting a disturbing message "You must stop killing us".

-"The Vision of Milty Boil": A very short, extremely wealthy contractor keeps building vast high rise apartment buildings with lower and lower ceiling heights.

-"Tomorrow's Wall Street Journal": Would you like a copy...well the Devil will give you one for a price.

-"The General Zapped an Angel": One day in Vietnam a US General shot one of God's angles from a helicopter gun ship and then...

A Wonderful Secret Find Of Magic & Science.

You'd likely skip over this softcover on almost all conditions. There is no flag to the wonderful, magical tales inside. Howard Fast paints stories of wonder, sadness and curiosity in this short paperback of short stories. The stories "tug" at you, and it's a book difficult to put down. Somewhere between child-like innocence, and the drama that life often carries, you'd do well to pick up a copy. I can almost assure you (if you enjoy science fiction) and a great twist in the expected) you'll pass your copy on to someone you feel 'must' read one or all the stories, and find yourself back here ordering another copy Amazon. I've passed at least five copies along, and told the book is a "treasure" for the heart. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Fast is a solid golden age SF writer. He obviously loves playing ideas and exploring them in novel ways. He does just that. Enjoyable, hopeful stories that are well worth reading.

About the Author
Leslie S. Kaplan (Ed.D.), a retired school administrator in Newport News, Virginia, is a full-time education writer and an adjunct research professor at Old Dominion University. She has provided middle and high school instructional leadership as well as central office leadership as a director of program development. Before becoming a school administrator, she worked as a middle and high school English teacher and as a school counselor with articles frequently published in The School Counselor. Kaplan's scholarly publications, co-authored with William A. Owings, appear in numerous professional journals. She also has co-authored several books and monographs with Owings, including CULTURE RE-BOOT: REINVIGORATING SCHOOL CULTURE TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES; LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR IN EDUCATION; AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOL FINANCE (in its second edition); TEACHER QUALITY, TEACHING QUALITY, AND SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT; BEST PRACTICES, BEST THINKING, AND EMERGING ISSUES IN SCHOOL LEADERSHIP; and ENHANCING TEACHER AND TEACHING QUALITY. Kaplan is co-editor of the Journal for Effective Schools, and also serves on the NASSP Bulletin Editorial Board. She is a past president of the Virginia Counselors' Association and the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and is currently a board member of Voices for Virginia's Children.

William A. Owings (Ed.D.) is a professor of educational leadership at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Owings has worked as a public school teacher, an elementary and high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. His scholarly publications, co-authored with Leslie S. Kaplan, include books on educational leadership and school finance as well as articles in National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Bulletin, Journal of School Leadership, Journal of Effective Schools, Phi Delta Kappan, Teachers College Record, the Journal of Education Finance, and the Eurasian Journal of Business and Economics. Owings has served on the state and international board of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), is currently the editor of the Journal for Effective Schools, and is on the Journal of Education Finance Editorial Advisory Board. He is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences and a consultant on educational leadership, school finance, and instructional improvement. Owings and Kaplan share the 2008 Virginia Educational Research Association Charles Edgar Clear Research Award for Consistent and Substantial Contributions to Educational Research and Scholarship.

Once the party of presidents, the GOP in recent elections has failed to win convincing national majorities. Republicans have lost four of the last six presidential races and lost the popular vote in five of the six. In the lone Republican victory, the party incumbent won—during wartime—by the slimmest of margins. Republican fortunes in Congress, meanwhile, have been almost a mirror image: in 1994 the GOP had controlled the Senate for just ten years in the previous six decades; since then it has had a majority more than half the time. Its control of the House of Representatives is even more striking. In 1994 Republicans gained their first House majority in forty years; since then they’ve been in control for all but four years, and they will likely retain a majority for the rest of this decade. What explains this seismic shift in the party’s center of power, and what does it mean?
 
In this fascinating and important book, Tom Schaller examines national Republican politics since President Ronald Reagan left office in 1989. From Newt Gingrich’s ascent as Speaker of the House through the defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012, Schaller traces the Republican Party’s institutional transformation and the political consequences.
 
Gingrich’s “Contract with America” set in motion a vicious cycle, Schaller contends: as the GOP became more conservative, it became more Congress-centered, and as its congressional wing grew more powerful, the party grew more conservative. This dangerous loop, unless broken, may signal a future of increasing radicalization, dependency on a shrinking pool of voters, and less viability as a true national party. In a thought-provoking conclusion, the author discusses repercussions of the GOP decline, among them political polarization and the paralysis of the federal government.

Quite possibly the best guide for understanding US politics today

After the past two presidential elections, the view that the GOP was electorally doomed could be heard repeatedly in a variety of media outlets. The demographic changes had apparently played a central role in delivering the White House to Barack Obama and things were only going to get worse for Republicans from here on out. At the same time though, Republicans gained historic majorities in Congress, culminating most recently in their largest number of House seats since the late 1920s. Schaller does a thorough and highly readable job of illustrating how and why the Republican Party of the past 20 to 30 years has focused on governing from Capitol Hill (in particular from the House chamber). This evolution has not come about by chance - instead many Republican and conservative politicians and activists actively pushed for a strategy that sought to give precedence of the legislative over the executive branch.

The establishment of the GOP as the party of Congress and the Democrats as the party of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (a reversal of the trends between the late 1960s and early 90s) is of course innately linked to the broader changes America's party system has undergone. Both parties are ideologically sorted and House members in particular have little to no incentive to appeal to moderates in such an environment. For the GOP this means its incredibly poweful House wing will in all likelihood not alter its ideological course in the years to come as the only thing many (if not most) congressional Republicans have to fear are challengers from the right. Schaller's work adds valuable insight into this field of work, analyzing the ever growing gap between what's good for congressional Republicans and what's good for the party's presiential wing.

Republicans Take Heed!

Schaller has an interesting hypothesis about the state of the Republican party today. That is the Republicans have found that, rather than becoming a more inclusive party and reaching out to minorities and liberals, they have decided that it is more in their interest to concentrate on getting out the vote of their more conservative members and suppressing the votes of other parties. This by stricter voter registration laws, gerrymandering of political districts, and fear tactics. While these methods work for the distended, artificial districts they have created, ensuring the reelection of congressional members, they do not seem to transfer to their presidential candidates. A great deal of discussion ensues to make his case, which he does admirably. The Tea Party and the effects they are having on the Republican party, as well as the system as a whole, is covered well. I, for one, have to admit being becoming a believer in his theory. The book flows well, and is very well written. The Republicans would be well advised to read this book, and adjust their policies if they ever want to win the White House.

Born over half a century ago in a large, middle class family, the youngest of 7 siblings in an under-developed, so-called 3rd World country, the author struggled his way through challenges each day. Wearing hand-me-downs through school with more patches than on a corn on the cob, the author managed to create his niche and come out on top in ways more than one.
 
The Author`s claim as an 'Achiever' is open for your critical analysis in the light of his outstanding victories highlighted within. Here's a book that shows how to make marmalade out of lemons.

Purchased via Amazon.co.uk Mr Bharat Mathur has published a totally unique book, the like of which I have not seen before. The author has taken what may seem like common good advice and do-well proverbs, but used them in such a way as to show you the best intentions behind that advice, in order to lead you towards a more positive attitude and with it a more successful life style.
For example, quoting Mr Royce (of RR fame) "If you can't make it better then redesign it", and what to we get? a Silver Shadow or a Phantom.
There are gently but timely reminders on good business sense to improve your status among your clients ie focus on customers needs (one satisfied customer brings ten, whereas one dissatisfied will take away a hundred). We all know it, but sometimes forget in our rush through life.

My personal favorites are the reminders to "dare to dream", with numerous fascinating examples. I hope the author will forgive me if I quote verbatim, from my own personal hero T. E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, “All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find it a vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they act their dreams with wide open eyes to make it possible.”

The author's advice will stand up to any scrutiny. Be a giver not a taker and go the extra mile in business, who will argue with this, with excellent examples of how this advice will actually help you if you stop and remind yourself of them. Mr Mathur then moves onto his 12 steps to success which I would strongly advise to read. This is a fascinating book, and the author's description of his own life and success does himself proud without for a moment seeming to brag. Described only as demonstrations of his advice in practice of which I most whole heatedly agree. A wonderful book Mr Mathur.
A reminder to self: Life is not a fierce competition where you must defeat all others in order to succeed.

A must-read for anyone who wants to follow their passion and achieve more in life!

I truly enjoyed reading this uplifting book, and I especially liked the chapter on the 8 Ps: Perfection in Performance Prepares Path to Productivity and Provides Personal Pride! Today we are flooded with information about how we shouldn’t dream or reach for more, and how perfection is an awful thing! But without reaching for perfection, what else is there to reach for?

I enjoyed the author’s perspective about having to let go of mediocrity and public opinions and moving forward, at our individual pace, toward the perfection we find meaningful! In this journey, as the author describes, we will have to let go of our so called friends who like to gossip, to stay true to our real friends, and to spend our time perfecting our skills for greater success! What a wonderful way to see ourselves, the world, and others!

I agree with the advice on TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More, and I enjoyed answering the author question on when, where, and why I, the reader, was born.

The entire book is so empowering, uplifting, and speaks to our deeper understanding that we are here to succeed and to live happy, fulfilled lives, and the author is showing us the way to do so, easily, based on his years of experience and expertise! I also really enjoyed that the author encourages us to see him as a wise friend here to assist us, and not some far away guru teaching us things that will take us decades to learn! I really liked the down to earth tone in this book and that the author’s true belief in our ability as human beings to succeed in our individual lives shines through!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants more in life, who wants to achieve their dreams, follow their passion, and not spend years of experience learning what they can learn by reading the wise words in this book!

Why are you here? That is the real question. It is the question everyone should ponder and answer. It is also fitting regarding this book. Why are you here, looking, trying to decide whether or not to purchase this book? You are obviously here because you are looking for a better life. You are looking to be more than you are. This is one of the most powerful books I have read in a long time. I can't really find a way to recommend this book more highly than to say go purchase it right now. If you don't get and read this book, you really aren't serious about improving your life. I say, you are reading this review because you want more from life. You want to be successful. OK. You are in the right place. So, go ahead and get it and read it. You are not going to be disappointed. Listen to what the author, Bharat Mathur, is telling you. Do what he says. Pay attention to the 8 Ps: Perfection in Performance Prepares Path to Productivity and Provides Personal Pride. Pay attention to the steps to improvement he provides for you to follow and do it. It is a very well written book and doesn't take long to read because once you start, you won't stop until you get to the end, which really isn't the end. It is just the beginning. Go purchase this book now. Answer the question: When, where and why was I born? If you are truly serious about success, allow him to "pull" you to that success. If you don't read this book, you don't really have a problem remaining in your current situation. Is your current situation sufficient? I think not. Don't resist. Be pulled to your true worth.

Emily Smith was born and raised in a small town in New Hampshire, where she started writing at an early age. Her grandmother was a children’s author, and she comes from a family of English teachers. Disappointing

Alex and Beth, who were best friends before lovers, have been married for three years when Alex realizes that she is unhappy. In the beginning of their marriage, things were good, they had fun, and their relationship was based on love, it seems. But now, Alex feels stuck in her job, her marriage, and in her life overall.
And then Alex meets Michelle in a coffee shop. Michelle is everything Alex has ever wanted in a woman, she is adventurous, confident, sexy, gorgeous, good-hearted, and she has a meaningful job. In comparison, Alex’s imperfect/normal wife Beth, can only fall short. This realization sends Alex on a tailspin; over and over she regrets settling for Beth in the first place, accompanied by examples of why Beth is the evil one in this story (she is unambitious in her job, they hardly talk anymore, she never asks about her day, the apartment is a mess, etc.). Predictably, Alex falls in love with Michelle, but she battles this attraction for the majority of the book because of that inconvenient vow she took three years ago...

Initially, the story sounded very promising and I was intrigued by the idea of how one would reconcile an existing marriage with falling in love with "the one".

Here comes the spoiler alert: Don’t keep reading if you haven’t read the book and want to be unbiased!

While I mostly liked Smith’s writing (she is good with words and has the ability to make the story flow along), there is much room for improvement in the way she develops her characters. Let me specify this statement. Based on the information I get from the book, Alex is a one-dimensional character who undergoes no growth in this story. More importantly, Alex is not a driving force in her own story, nor does she take an active part in her life. On the contrary, everything just happens to her. For example, she is wallowing in self-pity about the demise of her marriage without doing anything at all to save it (and no, one lame attempt at sex doesn’t count).
Or let’s look at her job. She complains that it’s a dead-end job and all she does is doing coffee runs and pushing pencils. But she doesn’t actively do anything about it, she just keeps wondering why she isn’t getting ahead at all. Now, it isn’t unusual for people to be stuck in dead-end jobs because the company truly does not offer any chance to rise up, or because discrimination is involved. That is indeed demotivating. And I am not saying that Alex cannot complain about her job as everybody does, but I am saying that she doesn’t do anything about it. Surprisingly, once she meets Michelle and she starts sitting around at the coffee house all day Saturday, mostly ogling Michelle but also working on her case, things change. Who would have thought that actually working on the case would bring her to the attention of her boss? The boss then trusts her with handling slightly more. You see, she could have done this all along, if she wasn’t just a passive recipient of life’s circumstances.

This brings me to the next issue: plot holes. For one, why would someone who has been "pushing pencils" all day, suddenly become partner-material in a law firm, simply because she handled one case? This is unrealistic, to say the least. Second, if someone is in a major accident, fracturing her clavicle, how can this person have sex, cuddle and offer her chest as a pillow only days later? That would be extremely painful.

I could go on and on about this, but I think you get the gist. To sum up, the story sounded interesting, but quickly unraveled into a laundry list of complaints by an extremely passive and egocentric main character without any redeeming characteristics. It is simply infuriating that Alex takes no responsibility for her life whatsoever! Plus, we never hear anybody else’s side; however, with side comments such as the ones about Beth, I am starting to think that her story would have been much more interesting.
Seriously, it doesn’t take a therapist to understand that Alex will never be happy if she keeps complaining and relying on other people to make her happy.

I understand that I should not expect Pulitzer-level fiction from a lesbian romance novel. I also know that it isn’t easy to write good ficion. But please, judging by her overall pleasant writing style, I am sure that Smith can do so much better than this!

Unique perspective and well worth a read

My Quick Summary: Alex is unhappily married to Beth when she meets Michelle in a coffee shop. The next year they meet up frequently, becoming closer in the process and causing Alex to face the problems in her marriage.

Honestly, I would give this book 4 1/2 stars if I could since I thought it was very well written and unique in its approach. I know books about infidelity or the possibility of makes some people want to shy away, but I thought this book took a really honest approach. Sometimes you grow apart from the person you’ve committed yourself to, and other times you should never have committed yourself to them in the first place. This book takes the reader through all of that in the perspective of Alex, and makes you relate to her even if you’ve never been there.

I also thought the connection and chemistry between herself and Michelle was hot and completely believable. It amazed me that they actually got to know each other without jumping in to bed. The shock!!!

The only reason I didn’t give it the full 5 stars was because I personally like when we hear both perspectives of our main characters. That’s just a personal preference for me and others may not be bothered by that fact.

Closing statement: I would recommend buying book this for sure.

Same Time Next Week is the first novel by Emily Smith that I’ve read. The book is well written and follows a good pace. The plot significantly different than many f/f romances novels and kept me hooked on a rainy Sunday. There were many occasions in the book that I was wondering to myself… “I don’t know how I feel about this”… I kind of felt like I was seeing something that I shouldn’t have been. Voyeur is not the right word, but it’s the only thing that comes to mind. The two many characters Alex and Michelle meet serendipitously at a lesbian coffee shop and form a friendship that develops into something for. All of the sudden Alex realizes that she has become a better version of herself, motivated by her relationship with Michelle. Alex has finally found the one that “checks all the boxes,” but she’s married.
Happy ending: subjective
Sex: Yes
