Very big

If you need a map of the ENTIRE Desert Cities area, then this map is for you, but you should realize that it is over 3' x 3 1/2' when opened -- almost impossible to use when driving unless you first plot out your destination and fold the map accordingly.

Unfortunately, Rand McNally also used to publish a plastic laminate fold-out map of the Palm Springs city area only, which has now been discontinued. These maps, which are very easy to use, are now being sold on-line (often used) for upwards of $500 each.

Does the job, but hard to read

As someone else said, the names and such on this map are so tiny it is practically not useable. But I was desperate, I needed a map for a recent trip, so I ordered this, spread it out on the table, plotted my various routes and marked them in ink, so at least I could figure out where I was. My husband drove, I navigated, so it worked out okay. I am not sure how they could actually improve on it, but it IS very difficult to use.

Full marks to Amazon.com (USA site) for sending the map so quickly to me in the UK. Very fast ! Didn't realise how big Palm Springs was - seems huge. Map of typical USA quality - in other words hard to read to those like me who are used to the UK's Ordnance Survey but with the combination of a magnifying glass and / or scanning parts of the map onto my computer and expanding the fine print I managed to make out the location of the hotel for my forthcoming holiday. Many thanks !

Best book of the bunch on Bentwaters?

This book, originally published in 1997, is one of several written about the famous Rendlesham Forest/Bentwaters UFO incident in December 1980, and possibly the most interesting to read.

Repeated encounters with UFOs were reported over three nights (25-28 December) in 1980 at, over and near the twin RAF bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge, large neighboring airfields in Suffolk leased for several decades from the UK Government by the US Government and at that time hosting USAF nuclear strike aircraft and nuclear weapons. Warren was at the time a young airman stationed at Bentwaters, and claimed to be present during the third night of encounters when an unknown craft actually landed at Capel Green and was surrounded by USAF ground personnel - incidentally off-base carrying loaded weapons, specifically against a signed agreement between the UK and US governments.

It is only fair to say that some controversy surrounds Warren and his outspoken claims, and he has been accused in recent years by some former Air Force colleagues of being "economical with the truth." In short, it's been claimed by some, like the Deputy base commander Charles Halt, that Larry wasn't on duty that night and personally witnessed nothing. Certainly his claims about being forcibly detained in an underground facility under the base and subjected to mind-indoctrination following the incident have been questioned with good cause. However, something very serious involving unidentified flying objects intruding over this nuclear-weapons holding NATO facility and "adversely affecting the ordnance", of long duration and with multiple military and civilian witnesses, did happen as reported beyond dispute. The sheer number of witnesses, the physical effects on some of the airmen (damaged retinas due to the brightness of the light in one encounter, including Larry Warren, medically certified) and the incriminating quantity of official paperwork generated between the base command and the UK government subsequent to the incident make this a certainty. Furthermore, multiple witnesses testify that some kind of formalised communication took place between "extraterrestrial biological entities" from the landed craft and senior USAF personnel, who seemed prepared for the encounter and to know exactly what to do.

The book is co-written by Warren and respected researcher Peter Robbins. Warren's narrative in the first part of the book relates his life story up to, during and after the incident and is candid about his values and motivations. He was from an early age something of an anglophile and was delighted to be posted to Bentwaters in England, where he hoped to enjoy his tour. He also reports serial family encounters with High Strangeness and sounds like a serial abductee, the understanding of which phenomenon may require a certain amount of separate study by the reader and acquaintance with the published work of Harvard Professor John Mack, researcher Budd Hopkins, Professor David Jacobs and Raymond Fowler, to name a few. This situation complicates his narrative even more, as well it might.

Robbins' authored sections of the book are printed in italics to differentiate from Warren's, which are written in normal type. The narrative tells the story of their joint investigation, all self-funded from meagre resources, through some fourteen separate visits to the UK (both the authors were US-based by this time) and the journey which led to the writing and publishing of the book. The style is pacy, interesting and engaging, and the editorial decision to tell the tale in story form succeeds in making the book something of a page-turner as the reader shares their struggles, tribulations and the excitement of discovery. It's a very enjoyable read - the type of narrative from which film scripts are made. This is not to diminish the serious content, the thoroughness and persistence of the research, nor the disturbing conclusions. Larry and Peter invested a great deal of time, effort and personal resources in pursuit of the truth of this most important event, and the first edition of the book was famously brandished in the British Parliament during a session demanding answers from the government on the defence implications of the incident.

The hardcover edition contains 16 pages of relevant monochrome photographs and an extensive index of scanned/photocopied documents in support of the truth of the incident. There is also an interesting section about the employment of Wilhelm Reich's controversial cloud-busting technology (one of Robbins' areas of specialist research knowledge) at Bentwaters by the USAF.

Interesting postscript: in September 2009 I was honored to be given a guided walking tour of Rendlesham Forest and Bentwaters (now converted for civilian use) by Peter Robbins, on a splendid late summer Sunday afternoon, including the site at Capel Green where the landed craft had left a large circular area of dessicated soil on which nothing would grow for several years and from which Peter took his soil samples for analysis in Massachusetts. The local council in Suffolk now marks the walking trails with numbered square wooden marker posts, each of which sports the small image of a bug-eyed grey alien head. Nice touch.

Of the many books written about this incident, there is in the opinion of this reviewer one other which is definitely worth reading: the late Georgina Bruni's "You Can't Tell the People" (a direct quote from then PM Margaret Thatcher talking to the author about the ET issue). If you read both books, you'll have a good all-round understanding about the Rendlesham Forest Incident. I don't want to denigrate other books on this subject, but none are as good as these two.

Stunning Story from Bentwaters Eyewitness

I came across this book as a result of reading Leslie Keans' terrific "UFOs...", and looking for more information on The Rendlesham Forest UFO. I hit gold with this account of not only the incident, but a decades long investigation by one of the USAF Security Patrol people who was an on the scene witness to events that are corroborated by several other participants - and challenged by others. Larry Fawcett provides a personal account of the case from his perspective as an Air Force SP, while author Peter Robbins gives a higher level perspective as one who is no stranger to the UFO phenomenon. The two accounts are woven together and it makes for a compelling read.

The account of the incident is embedded in a back story that gradually unfolds about the Bentwaters-Woodbridge NATO airbase that was the forward storage area for tactical nuclear weapons to be used in an anticipated cold war tank attack across Europe by the Soviet Union. A-10 Tankbuster aircraft and missile silos figure in the events, with weapons disabled in hardened silos by strange light beams from above. Penetration of the bases airspace by unknowns over a long weekend was a very big and disturbing question for the USAF, and the armed patrols of US Security Police into the UK countryside made this a sensitive diplomatic issue as well.

The story of this unsophisticated airman over several decades trying to sort out the truth from fiction or delusion, and the NATO related history of the bases provides ample opportunity for X-Files speculation or just plain good reading for those interested this sort of thing. As the authors become minor celebrities (or villians) in the ufo community, the reader gets some apprecdiation for the complexities not just of the phenomenon, but of the entire ufo subculture that has grown up around these incidents.

I confess to having been frustrated for a time with the narrative structure, number of characters and details, but got sucked into the fascinating background information about Bentwaters, NATO, Security Protocols, and the Cold War, and found myself reading on in spite of myself. When I finished, I felt that I had spent my time well. Recommended for those with the patience to overlook the book's structural problems and multiple narrators, and willingness to go back and forth a bit to stay on track. Great book for a long and snowy afternoon in front of the fire.

LEFT AT EAST GATE

"Left at East Gate" by Larry Warren and Peter Robbins is an extensively documented account of the UFO incident that occurred in late December of 1980 on the American airbase at Bentwaters and Woodbridge located in the Rendlesham forest.

Larry Warren was on duty and claims to have seen not just flying UFO's, and "funny-lights", but an actual landed craft with occupants. In addition he claims that he and other security personnel were ordered to surround the craft while the commanding Air force officer in charge of the detail seemed to have some type of telepathic communication with the occupants of that craft! This story and or, numerous parts of the incident were subsequently corroborated by over 20 witnesses who were somehow involved either directly or in a peripheral manner. Shortly thereafter, Warren claims he was escorted into a huge underground complex of the base and "de-briefed" by special sections of the CIA, and NSA. While in the complex, Mr. Warren also claims to have seen aliens working with and alongside Air force and Intelligence personal. In the interim, he is subsequently discharged from the service for his outspokenness, and becomes totally obsessed in his personal mission to prove that..." he really saw what he claims to have seen."
Normally, when I hear stories about the infamous Government underground secret complexes with and without alien co-workers, I can't help but have a rather "tongue and cheek" attitude about such things. However, even if, Mr. Warren was confused about his "tour" in the underground sanctuary of the Air force bases, there is a certain ring of truth regarding his UFO encounters and what followed.

Was Mr. Warren a victim of some dark sided Government experiment using psychotropic drugs, or, hallucinogenics? Did Airman Warren become a real live laboratory subject as portrayed in the 1990 movie, "Jacobs's Ladder" wherein, the Government allegedly used some experiential drug known as "BZ" (Glycolate anticholinergic) on its Vietnam troops in the field? The reader must make his/her own determination. Personally, I believe that Mr. Warren may have fallen into both arenas.

His description of the craft, the occupants, and the on-going trauma that he has experienced since that incident are without a doubt, totally and unequivocally believable.
The use of drugs and or, psychological manipulation as a "masking factor" to enhance the art of disinformation is also apparent in this case. In addition, the intense accumulation of documents, copies of tape recorded conversations, photographs, and admitted confessions of this individual's personal problems during these events and years that followed only serve to bolster his claims.

As in most high-profile UFO cases, there are always repercussions to the witnesses and or, their families. (I.e. Sgt. Lonnie Zamora case 1964). What ever Mr. Warren witnessed (and he did witness "something" of gigantic importance), his story... is worth reading! I'm truly sorry for the on-going sadness that he has endured because of this historical event, but... I am also impressed with his courageous efforts to share his experiences with the public at large.

A frighteningly good read!!!

Alice Guy BlachT (1873-1968), the world's first woman filmmaker, was one of the key figures in the development of narrative film. From 1896 to 1920 she directed 400 films (including over 100 synchronized sound films), produced hundreds more, and was the first—and so far the only—woman to own and run her own studio plant (The Solax Studio in Fort Lee, NJ, 1910-1914). However, her role in film history was completely forgotten until her own memoirs were published in 1976. This new book tells her life story and fills in many gaps left by the memoirs. Guy BlachT's life and career mirrored momentous changes in the film industry, and the long time-span and sheer volume of her output makes her films a fertile territory for the application of new theories of cinema history, the development of film narrative, and feminist film theory. The book provides a close analysis of the one hundred Guy BlachT films that survive, and in the process rewrites early cinema history.

A filmmaker herself and one of the foremost authorities on the subject of early cinema, McMahan examines the themes of the few remaining Guy Blache films, the techniques of her actors, and the evolution of a film "language" in the director's choice of shots. About the Author
Alison McMahan is a Mellon Fellow in Visual Culture at Vassar College. From 1997 to 2001 she ran the MA program in film and television studies at the University of Amsterdam, where she taught early cinema and new media. She has published widely on early cinema and has carried out research for documentaries such as The Lost Garden: The Life and Work of Alice Guy Blaché (1995, National Film Board of Canada) and for the Emmy-award winning Into the Light ('State of the Arts' series, New Jersey Network, 1995). She was interviewed as an early cinema expert for the documentary Reel Models: The Women of Early Film which first aired on the American Movie Classics Channel in 2000.

McMahan Writes The True Moving Picture History

"Why was Guy so completely forgotten?" The man she worked for in France, Leon Gaumont, was an inventor and valued invention exclusively. The films Guy directed were used to sell equipment. Documentation attributing direction is scarce before 1905. Film histories written from the 1920s through the 70s would not, of course, catalog her accomplishments. Until 1912 there was no copyright protection for film scripts.

Guy-Blache was integral in the birth of film in France, as well as the development of cinematic narrative. She developed location shooting, she pioneered a studio system years before the same was done by Ince in the U.S. She trained other directors who would go on to earn fame, as well as set designers who are in the history of film. She trained her husband who directed Buster Keaton, which made Keaton a star. She made over 100 synchronized sound films when synchronized sound was still a misty vision.

This book begins the discussion, and perhaps will encourage the work to find and document the work of other women artists.

McMahan's work in piecing together a filmography of the extant films of Alice Guy Blache is exemplary, and hopefully a bellwether for further study.

Fascinating, remarkable research

This book is an amazing labor of love. I should admit that before reading it, I knew very little about the book's subject, Alice Guy. The same can clearly not be said of the author, Alison McMahan, who shows an extreme devotion to the work of her subject - not merely in picking through it, analysing it, explaining it, and bringing it to life, but in hunting it down in the first place.
Note that I referred to the author's devotion to the WORK of her subject. This is not a biography - more a loving excavation of the career of an extraordinary woman, with many personal details and anecdotes thrown in for good measure. But in the light of the recent survey I read which showed that only 5% of Hollywood films are directed by women (forgive me if I've got that figure wrong, but it was tiny, anyway), the career of Alice Guy seems utterly remarkable. The fact that this woman achieved so much in such a short space of time, in the very earliest days of the film industry, will truly make you stop and think.
I would willingly have given this book 5 stars, except for two reasons. First, there are a handful of typographical errors - for which I cannot blame the author, but they did irritate me; secondly, (and I'm being selfish here) I wanted to read more - and yet the end of the book is taken up with an enormous list of Alice Guy's films, which I am sure will be of great use to scholars, but left me feeling a tiny bit short-changed. But I'd hate to end on a negative note, so I'll say this: Alison McMahan has written a highly original and inspiring book, and I hope that many more people get to read it.

About the Author

Gene Helfman is a professor emeritus at the Odum School of Ecology's Program in Conservation Ecology and Sustainable Development, University of Georgia. He is co-author of Fishes: The Animal Answer Guide, also published by Johns Hopkins. George H. Burgess is coordinator of museum operations and director of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History.

A One Stop Scientific Resource

Sharks: The Animal Answer Guide is a thoroughly presented, exhaustively researched, one-stop information guide for any question a person may ever have about sharks. This isn't a light and airy book for kids that talks down to them about the animal with bright images and graphics; rather, this is intended as a reference and resource for all ages to seriously address the shark species and have at fingertips everything that is currently known about the animal. The book is text heavy interspersed with B&W images as needed.

The book is broken down by type of question. Section 1 one answers general questions about sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras. Section 2 is full of questions about form and functions of sharks. Section 3 is about shark colors. Section 4 is for shark behavior questions. Section 5 is about ecology. Section 6 is reproduction and development. Section 7 is about shark food and feeding. Section 8 is about sharks and their interactions with humans. Section 9 is about shark problems. And section 10 is about human problems in how they deal with sharks.

The authors clearly have a great love for the animal and that comes through in the exhaustively researched knowledge of sharks. This is a great book for the budding marine biologist or older child either afraid of or fascinated by sharks to help them understand the animal and take it out of the realm of superstition or legend. As well, I enjoyed sharing several of the questions with my daughter to get her thinking about sea animals and to understand the species. This is also a great book for anyone fascinated by sharks and wanting to know more as well.

The afterward by the authors really explain the motivation to write the book as well as its usefulness: "Together, we have reflected on how great it would have been to have found a book such as this one when our fascination with sharks was new."

My kudos to the authors for a fascinating reference book long overdue. Received as an ARC from the publisher.

For those of us who grew up with Jaws as our introduction to sharks, this book will make you want to go out in the water again. It's full of colorful, pedestrian friendly scientific elements for the armchair naturalist, scientist or inquisitive mind of any age. Some fascinating random facts will show how sharks influenced competitive swimsuit design, what wetsuits are least attractive to sharks, and how to improve your keel design next time you design the next Americ'a Cup. Sorry New Zealand - you didn't get the Cup this year, but you still have some amazing sharks in your waters! And Dr. Gene will guide you through every part of this amazing creature.

As a scientist, I was thrilled to see that Helfman and Burgess' book Sharks: The Animal Answer Guide, was packed full of the most current data on sharks and their relatives. As an avid reader and communicator on ocean issues, I was equally thrilled to find that the book was not only easy to read, but fun to read as well. I've already sent copies to all of my shark-loving friends and will continue to share the book widely. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

I loved part one, and this is a great follow up. Thankfully Amelie is bust writing the final part now so it shouldn’t be too long before the story is complete  
After Fifty Shades there’s been a multitude of erotic romance reads in this theme of rich guy/not so rich girl, and so many are frankly dull, bland, copycat failures for me. Tiger Lily though has that something special, great characters, interesting storyline and erotic and varied sex scenes. I so hate it when the sex not only takes over the story but is bland and repetitive...not here though – perfect balance of sex and story.
 I had to re read the end of last book – I read so much that its easy to get confused, and I couldn’t quite remember how this had been left...anyway here we are with poor Lily wanting more from Jonas, and stubborn man that he is he’s sticking rigidly to the companion only line. So for now they are apart. Gregor, her boss,  can see she’s upset but there’s history between him and Jonas, and he thinks its for the best, he thinks Lily is too good for Jonas and that history will repeat itself. He wants more from Lily too – and so does someone else, Jonas’ friend Ian. He’s met Lily when she was with Jonas and now Dani ( Jonas’ ex wife, a caring lady) has involved him in Lily’s attack. Her ex attacked her at the end of the last book, and Dani and Ian would like her to press charges. She doesn't want to though, even though he’s done it before. Declan has promised her he’s going to rehab and getting help, and she doesn’t want this to ruin his life. After all she was in love with him in the past, and he was a great support when her parents died. Ian insists she at least makes a legal statement to him  in case of any future problems or she changes her mind. She agrees, but insists they keep it all from Jonas. She knows he’ll come back if he hears about it and her heart just can’t take it, knowing how he feels won’t change. Poor Lily, she’s in a hard place. Life is going to get tougher for her very quickly though, with more problems from Declan, Ian and Gregor both hoping for more from her, and Jonas still keeping tabs on her. Then she finds out he’s gone back to Melissa. Lily is gutted, and along with the issues from Declan she spirals into despair.
Poor Lily – it seems everything hits her at once in this book. Jonas won’t move forward into more than the companion role for her, even though he knows she’s in love with him, and its clear to everyone he feels more for her that he’ll admit. He can’t bear for her to be with anyone else though, was furious when David ( the chauffeur) told him Gregor kissed her, furious when he saw her with Ian, and yet he’s now with Melissa.
Dani – she’s a real star and a literal lifesaver. I thought she was going to be one of those friends on outside but evil inside types, but she seems a genuinely lovely lady so far. Melissa though – she’s great, a real nasty b itch, and every good romance needs one of those IMO! I can’t believe Jonas can be so obtuse as he is in this book – but of course if he wasn't then things wouldn’t be nowhere near as much fun. Once again Amélie has written a gripping and sensual story, with unexpected plots and I’m so keen to read the final part and see how it all ends. Its definitely one I’ll reread when its all released so I can go back to back on the instalments and read all in one go. That’s the way I enjoy these stories best, when I can get the full effect of the drama.

#AMAZING

The only reason I'm not calling the author bad names is because I'm lucky enough to have all 3 books together. Book 2 took it up a notch in intensity, and I couldn't get enough of it either.

Lily is not the type of girl that can do the casual thing, so she has developed feelings towards Jonas now. He's still not quite there, but before they can really explore more, her ex beats her up. Lily is too ashamed to tell the truth, so she runs and cuts off all ties with Jonas. He finally gives up, not knowing the truth of what's going on, and moves on, while Lily completely falls apart. Will Lily be able to trust Jonas enough to tell him the truth before something happens to her?

I"m totally loving Amelie S. Duncan's writing style. She has kept me hooked to where I can't do anything else before I finish all 3 books. Her character development stays perfect, as layers are being uncovered bit by bit. The well written storyline hasn't changed from the first, just keeps getting better. She's done a fabulous job writing realistic characters, where I'm so fully invested in Lily, that my heart physically hurt for her in this book. The sexy scenes are still panty melting goodness, and now there's more love involved. I'm so glad I'm getting the chance to read this amazing series.

Great writing and a fabulous erotic romance series!

I absolutely adored Part One of “Tiger Lily” and didn’t think it could get any more intense. I was wrong. Part Two will break you down and touch on emotions you didn’t even know existed in the previous book. It is emotionally intense as relationships and characters become even more three dimensional and complex.

Lily takes a lot of hits in this one and the reader feels every last one with her. I love books that make me feel (don’t we all?) and Amelie Duncan clearly has a talent for making readers feel. I also felt Lily’s growth from first meeting her in Book One. Readers learn more about what makes Jonas tick and provides some history and “aha” moments in understanding his mentality and actions. I honestly kept hoping some horrific accident would befall Declan. Seriously, like a giant meteor would just land on him and crush him. That may sound wicked to those who haven’t read the book but you will wish the same once you do.

Loved Part Two and I am greatly looking forward to Part Three and what the talented Amelie Duncan has planned for Lily and Jonas. Great writing and a fabulous erotic romance series!
