"THE FAITH OF A LAY MUSLIM" is not a conventional Biography. Professor Muhammad
Iqbal, whose account of life--very personal, family details, his
intellectual pursuits,literary encounters and immersion-research and
teaching, his interactions and relationships (intimate and formal) with
scholars of eminence of his milieu have been skillfully weaved in a grand and
unique colourful tapestry of vast dimensions. The book heralds a new genre in
the art of Biographical writing and that too by no less a scholar of great Eminence,
his son "DR DAUD RAHBAR"--Professor Emeritus, BOSTON University.
The book is highly readable and style captivating
for a scholarly "dense" research.The indepth narrative with copious notes
has a large canvas in its sweep of lively anecdotal details of early
life, a unique impact of Aligarh on his persona for the rest of his life as
an Aligarian in spite of a successful sojourn in Cambridge.( Aligarh
attire in Oriental College group pictures are indicative of the stamp).
Professor Iqbal's academic career and persona is
woven around the literary reform movements,Genesis of Sufism and Persian
response--resist and protest rigid SUNNI ORTHODOXY in a covert intellectual
way. The "book" takes shape of a critical history of the covert
intellectual responses and consequent emergence of classical age of great
Persian Sufi poets merging with the study of Existential Islam. Roots of
which are traceable to the evolution of Ghazal format in poetry. Genere of
Ghazal and Rubiyat was taken to great heights in Persian,Turkish and
Urdu-Persian poetry laying the ground rules. Liberties were taken in
wishing for things prohibited and even religious edicts or dogmas were
made an object of fun and verses bordering on blasphemy.This was all to
make life relaxed ,easy and tolerable.
Hardly any one of the tall figures has escaped
the sharp eye of Dr Rahbar. One gets acquainted with large corpus of
luminaries and their thought process. Western scholars will have a in-depth
knowledge of the craft of Ghazal. Dr Rahhbar has virtually provided a
primer for the fomat of Ghazal .

Music--that almost neglected art form amongst
Muslims, despite their contribution to classical music in India and
introduction of new instruments not withstanding) gets an honourable
academic treatment with explanations rarely seen.{ Dr Daud Rahbar is a
devotee of classical music and has written about it and given performances in
Delhi and Boston}
An unconventional persona unburdened by normal
traits of an Oriental scholar of Professor Iqbal emerges (a hafiz -
having committed to memory the entire Qura'n) hosted regular
musical evenings. Usual guests included another Hafiz-i-Qura'n
Hafiz Mahmood Shirani, "Maulvi" Mohammad Shafi -an ascetic and at times a stern person,
famous poet Hafeez Jallandhari of Shah Nama -i-Islam and author of Pakistan's national
anthem.Some how this censorial does not fit comfortably with the prevailing
conditions of Pakistan. Dr Iqbal's devotion also points to another trait
referred by Dr Rahbar as a "Person Ghazalified"
A very major, but important segment is that
of "notes"-which are precise and essential to the main text of
narrative. They fill in some unheard of facts imperative to form a
coherent picture.. These notes are also a tribute to the awesome
scholarship of Dr Daud Rahbar and reflective of a perceptive and fortunate
life in the company of some of the great scholars of a bygone era. Dr
Rahbar has filled "the great void which lasted five decades in scholarship
by this great dissertation of his. (Ends)

Having now published more than a million words, the author lives in Belleville, Canada with his lovely wife, Jane and their one remaining cat.

Not your typical cross-country adventure

Gus Gross returns from Afghanistan and decides to hitchhike around the USA and Canada before settling down in one spot. Gus comes across as a sympathetic character who's been dealt a crappy hand in life, save for his physical size and strength. Although the story is interesting and somewhat adventurous, it's also quite depressing and sad. His journey isn't really spurred by a sense of adventure, it's mostly based on his desire to avoid his trailer-trash mother after he returns from the war and finds she's spent his entire life savings. So he hitchhikes across the continent, and along the way, he is threatened and attacked, but also is befriended by a few people, too.

This book has some endearing qualities and some equally irritating qualities. The positives are the realistic obstacles he faces on a daily basis, and how he deals with the repeated setbacks and adversity. I feel the author nailed it with Gus's ups and downs and frustrations, along with his personal feelings toward the people he encounters. Gus's dark side was presented in a way that I could certainly relate to. Gus is a combination of strength, confusion, and anger, yet he strives to do the right thing, regardless of the circumstances. The negatives include the author's political views and opinions being dropped into the conversations quite often, especially early in the book. Made for some conversations that really sounded silly, hokey, and contrived. The writing, in some places, was quite amateurish, sounding as if it were geared toward sixth-graders. However, other places it was very well-written and poignant. (One other thing, and not really a detraction, but I had to chuckle at the large number of people that just happened to have 'extra' folding maps in their glove compartments that they would give to Gus.)

Overall, I liked the book, but it certainly isn't a mood-lifter. Somewhere between three and four stars, with some minor editing needed. But would I read another book featuring Gus and his struggles in life? You bet I would.

This book recieved a 2003 AJN Book of the Year Award. Now that I have digested it, I understand why my mentor gave it to me. I am an MSN student, but this book is a must read for all those involved in nursing education. That includes both faculty and students. The writing style holds one's interest. The topic of critical thinking can be so incredibly dry. This book is anything but dry. It's fabulous."

Adult Learning - This Is The Best!

I am a hospital nurse educator, and was recently challenged by my medical director (not a nurse but a huge team player) to gear all my programs to strengthen critical thinking in nurses. We as nurses can be so task oriented as a result of being so busy and gearing our strengths to meet our immense immediate demands. This book was outstanding in giving me ideas to use as I teach nurses (and myself) to reach that part of the brain that "really thinks", synthesizes and applies. I personally have felt a "new" part of my brain stimulated. For me, a nurse with 30 years in the field, this approach feels fresh and relevant.

This book is excellent for the concepts and ideas discussed in this book can be applied not only to nursing but to any profession in which is required a higher level of though. I liked reading this book a lot for critical thinking is the most important skill a health care professional can possess in order to be successful. I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)or any other certification test for critical thinking skills are essential for demonstrating a candidate has the knowledge to pass. This book teaches step by step how to develop critical thinking which will enable a person to pass any test based on this specific way of reasoning out information in order to make an educated judgment based on in-depth thinking. I am totally impressed the book and its author, Rosalinda Alfaro-LeFevre, made an outstanding job on researching and supporting her views and recommendations for developing critical thinking skills.
